TAMPA - With hearings next week on President Bush's nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, a political group with close ties to the White House sent two friends of Alito on a tour of Florida newsrooms Tuesday to push for his confirmation.

Lawyers John Barkett of Miami, a longtime personal friend of Alito, and Jeffrey Wasserstein of Washington, a former clerk for Alito, said the nominee is thoughtful judge not beholden to ideology. They called him decent and fair.
