Why does God hate West Virginia?
I'll have to ask Pat Robertson, he'll know.

37. I thought God spoke to Bush - that what the NY Time
magazine said, anyway. God told Bush he wanted him to attack Iraq, a country that was no threat to us, and had no WMDs. God must not have been paying attention before he talked to George that day, or he would have been able to see that there were no weapons.

Virginia: state with two dumbass Republican senators, George Allen and John Warner

34. You're right
The Blue Ridge Mountains are indeed in West Virginia. I know that Harper's Ferry, in the eastern panhandle, is part of the Blue Ridge, so all you Virginians, don't get so uppity!

38. I'm not a Virginian
The Blue Ridge Mountains may skirt a small portion of WVA's Eastern Panhandle (where I live, BTW), but any decent map will show you that most of the Blue Ridge runs through Virginia and North Carolina. http://www.peakbagger.com/range.aspx?rid=164
I've driven the length of the Blue Ridge from Georgia to PA, but these mountains are most spectacular in NC and VA.

WVA has more than its share of mountains but that small portion of the Blue Ridge isn't what comes to mind. Before the WV turnpike was completed I used to regularly drive from Charlottesville, VA to Sam Black Church (WVA), then take 60 for 100 miles of up and down hairpin turns through the mountains to Charleston. Do that in the winter enough times and your hair will go white, I'll tell ya. That's what comes to mind when I think of WVA mountains!

18. I thought it was West, By God, Virginia
Which I believe is a reference to the fact that West Virginia seceded from Virginia at the time of the Civil War and remained with the Union.

21. the double-secession part is correct
...a pretty cool move, on the part of those people, during such a horrible time in the nation. I believe there was even something illegal about it, maybe a prohibition (US Constitution?) against new states forming during time of war? Since they were un-seceding from the South, sticking WITH the Constitution, maybe the Congress just let it slide. When they first became a state, I think that the Customs House in Wheeling WV (my hometown) was our first state capitol, before WV selected Charleston as the capitol.

However, I dunno about the origins of the West-by-God-Virginia phrase...always heard it though, mostly from my New Hampshire kin, whose pronunciation of "Vuginiah" always sounded cool to me.

23. Why would you start a thread this asinine?
I see no humor in this tragedy. 12 men lost their lives because a bunch of rich jerks didn't think they had to 1) pay attention to rules and 2) give a crap about the lives of the workers who did the dirty work that made them rich. I appreciate satire just as well as the next person but it seems to me that it would be better applied in another situation.

36. It was a great game...
Too bad somebody had to lose that fine game, but WV was long overdue to win a bowl game. That game just might have helped save Big East Football. We needed a break in the Mountain State. Chalk it up to the Mo-Jo that was set loose by the Sugarbowl being played in Atlanta instead of New Orleans.

The sad story played out in West Virginia last night, was a bad way to start out the new year. The people here are in shock.

Your Dawgs will be right back in the hunt come September. Believe me, I know how bad it feels waiting till next year.

39. Hi Hubert,
Well "next year" finally arrived for WVU. Being an Atlanta sports fan (Braves and Falcons) I can certainly relate to that feeling.

AND, I strongly suspect that the Mountaineers will be a team to reckon with in the future, with those 2 fine freshmen in the backfield. :hi:

So sorry for the miners' families. They are in my thoughts tonight.
