My Grandmother passed away this morning...
she was quite sick (cancer) so it was not unexpected. I am moving to California soon, but of course, that must now be pushed back a little. We were not always close, she had a strong resentment towards white people, from her days as a maid, and just her overall experience in an intolerant town. I did not experience the extreme level of racism she had, and my Mom raised me to be accepting of others, so I did not embrace the hate. But when I had white girlfriends over, my Grandmother would sometimes let her anger fly. I am happy to say that she changed her ways, as least outwardly, towards my white female friends, including, most importantly, to the woman that became my wife. I am also happy I was able to spend some time with her last week, and to let her know that I loved her. I have been so busy preparing the house, and packing (my wife is already in Cali for her new job) and I have been going it alone, so I am fortunate, even for those few hours with her.

Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 02:06 PM by dave29
you are very lucky to have had that time. With my grandfather, when he passed, he had been suffering with Dementia for many years. When I last saw him I saw terror in his eyes... and it was one of the most profoundly sad moments of my life. He did not want to let go of my hand.

I saw his body lying in state, which brought me deep joy, much to my surprise - because you can tell the person you loved is no longer in that body.

He had many prejudices himself, specifically against the Japanese, whom he disliked until the end because they had the audacity to shoot at his airplane in WWII.

This same man loved collecting leaves, and had the most wonderful smile I've ever known.

Such is life!

16. I'm sorry for your loss, slor. My own mother is 86 now and in the
past year we have been having serious problems because of my stepfather. I have a feeling I will not be allowed the luxury of mending fences before she passes away. I am sorry for that and feel there is nothing I can do - I've tried. At any rate, we in CA will welcome you with open arms - we need all the people from DU that we can get.

17. My sincerest sympathies on your and your family's loss...
Be comforted in the fact that she is now in a place where there is no difference in color, race or creed, and that she has, like others before her, finally learned the truth about everything.

21. Those were different days, slor.
My white grandmother used to say, "I feel so sorry for 'those' people. They can't help it if they were born with a different skin color." These days it would be viewed as a racist condescending statement, but back then it was her clumsy way of trying to be understanding of people who weren't like her. But there is no color in heaven so they might be friends now. Sorry for your loss.

37. My deepest sympathy...
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

St. Francis

on the older black guys being the most bigoted because of what they were put through: "Cracker ass cracker fucking motherfucking cracker."

My condolences for your loss.
