2. I saw a segment yesterday where they interviewed a 'Nam vet & his wife. |
|
He served in 'Nam as a helicopter pilot and has been teaching since he go out, but he remained in the reserves. He said "if my Country needs me, then I'm ready. I took advantage of the benefits of the reserves, so now I owe them this time."
His wife said she'd support him, but she is very surprised that someone who has already served his time, and has reached his age has to go to Iraq.
I haven't looked, but I'm sure CNN has something on their site on this story.

I will look for something on it. On edit, he was a drilling reserve then. That's different.

4. They've been there for a while |

if they were in the active reserves. Haven't heard of any "lifers" who retired being called back to duty yet. Glad my brother is 64-if he was 62, he'd still have to report for duty.

Many, many of the National Guard are older Nam Vets. Couple of years ago a 55 year old, Grandfather, National Guard Nam Vet was killed in a roadside bombming. If they can call up 70 year old doctors?
They are DESPERATE!!!!

6. I'm guessing that they were somehow in the reserves, or guard |
|
a 30 year enlistment from the ceasefire of 1973 would take you to 2001-2003 depending how much training there was before shipping to Vietname.
Someone who has been out of service for 3-5 years may be within the window of the Ready-Reserve. I know there was a story of a 50+ yearold grandfather with 18 years in service was forced out in 1993 and he was recalled just before Christmas. His service reached back damned near to Vietnam.

They've been doing this for a while though haven't they? Getting the older vet members? I remember Jon Stewart had a story last year of a woman vet being called up who was in her late fifties or early sixties! And a DUer used to have a picture of a guy who was in Iraq about that age too if not older. I always wonder about the man. :(
