GOP working on solution to ports deal
"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republicans in Congress are crafting a solution under which the controversial deal allowing a state-owned Arab company to run some terminals at six U.S. ports could move forward.

The agreement would first have to pass a 45-day investigation focusing on the national security implications of the deal, several sources linked to the talks said.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee is encouraging DP World to ask a government review panel to kick-start the investigations, which is the best way to convince lawmakers the transaction won't jeopardize national security, a Frist aide said.

DP World, a company controlled by the United Arab Emirates, declined to comment Saturday."

It looks like the 'pukes are about to cave on the ports deal. All they want to company to do is the 45 day investigation, which would no doubt be another Bush Admin rubber stamp.

Brace yourself, folks, this deal is still going to get shoved through and approved. What you think doesn't mean squat.

1. Of course it's going through
Never was in doubt. THe pukes will promise to provide "oversight" and we see how good they are at that. They can't even rein in Bush and he's not the sharpest pencil in the box. :eyes:

3. Arabs taking over our ports is not a "Solution"
And I do not give a royal shit who thinks it is disparaging of our eastern neighbors to feel that way.

4. Rock meet hard place ...
Cave in and support this deal, and face your incensed constituents as a result.

Try to quash the deal, and make your beloved president (and head of your party) look like a damned fool.

Either way, the Dems can chalk this one up in their 'WIN' column.

6. I dunno about that; there's a slow-growing hue and cry emitting
from longshoremen and their unions, people on the front lines where the ports are concerned. They are not happy, and their numbers are growing. One good-sized strike would get everyone's attention!

9. This is exactly what I've been thinking.
I'm starting to believe that this port thing really is the last straw. People are finally waking up. Everyone knows the emperor is naked and, more importantly, everyone knows that everyone else knows; so people are no longer afraid to say what they're thinking.

The longshoremen may be the first to take to the streets but I suspect that they won't be alone for long. I just hope that it stays peaceful.

8. Part of the GOP plan will no doubt include Lieberman appearing
on Imus and Russert to tell us how this administration can be trusted when it comes to security.

13. I disagree
This deal is never going to go through because if it does the Democrats automatically take control of both the House and Senate this fall. Republicans may be evil but they are not stupid.

16. They still own the voting machines, though,
so they can still win elections.

14. They're just picking the sound bites they'll use...
...to calm us long enough to ink the deal. Same as with the expiring PATRIOT Acy provisions.

15. OMG. That bunch screws up everything it touches.
This will be no different. One thing for sure. Dubai will get a sweet deal and the taxpayers will pay for it . The GOP always goes this route.
