8. Not Just A Preacher! Exec. committee member of S. Baptist Convention!
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 06:11 PM by Southpawkicker
An executive committee member of the Southern Baptist Convention was arrested on a lewdness charge for propositioning a plainclothes policeman outside a hotel, police said.

Lonnie Latham, senior pastor at South Tulsa Baptist Church, was booked into Oklahoma County Jail Tuesday night on a misdemeanor charge of offering to engage in an act of lewdness, police Capt. Jeffrey Becker said. Latham was released on $500 bail Wednesday afternoon.

Latham, who has spoken out against homosexuality, asked the officer to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. Latham was arrested and his 2005 Mercedes automobile was impounded, Becker said.
<snip>

Latham is one of four Southern Baptist Convention executive committee members from Oklahoma.

Sad, probably a sex addict.

on edit, I posted just as another poster did almost the same title.

87. In their hearts, I sincerely believe, more often than not.
I think it's overstating the case to insist that all homophobes are closeted homosexuals, but I don't doubt for a minute that homophobia does stem from a denial of basic sexual urges, which can be directed toward members of the same sex, in most all of us.

I believe most 'phobes are terrified of those urges, and seek solace in their homophobia.

Some actually wind up "pastoring" other men on the sly; I doubt that most do, though.

41. There are only two ways it could have gone down as a "set-up"
Either:

1) The cop made the first move and the pastor said "yes"

2) The pastor made the first move and the cop said "busted."

Either way, the guy was willing to solicit sex (for money?) with a stranger.

88. It Had To Be For Money, Didn't It?
It's not against the law to suggest to another person that they find a room and have sex. The only thing that makes it illegal is for money to be part of the negotiation. It's not solicitation otherwise.

That must be something difficult to go through. I remember several years ago we had some troubles with our church (some members tried to gang up on our elders and make them do things that we were against) and that was difficult. I hope they can get passed this. I wonder what will happen to the guy. Will he still be able to preach? Worship with them or what?

34. What really honks me off
Are the folks who wrap themselves up in the Bible to play to popular prejudices. I have no idea what kind of person Lonnie Latham, the man named in this story, is. According to the report, and folks in Oklahoma will know better than me, he's on record as condemning homosexuals. How much freer would Mr. Latham be, how much better would he be able to answer his call to the ministry, if he didn't feel the need to deny who he is? Instead, he denies something that is at the very core of his essence in order to drive a late model Mercedes, get the praise of others, and encourages others to despise him for who he is.

Is it all worth it, Brother Latham? What have you succeeded in doing except to destroy yourself and hurt the mission you claim so support?

Finally, Austin has come of age. We're all grown up now, like other big cities in America - Boston, we're looking at you. No, we didn't start a multi-million dollar construction dig. No, we didn't win a super bowl or get a massive international airport. We got a priest sex scandal!

Apparently, the Reverend Paul Clogan entered a Marble Falls theater Friday night, found a nice seat next to a 16-year-old boy (in a theater with plenty of available seating) then about an hour into the movie he tried his version of the ol' popcorn trick - groping the boy, after not having said a word to him, much less having bought him any JuJu Bees. (Now save all of your high-and-mighty "this is not funny, a child was mollested" wrath. Yes, it is sad, though not surprising, that a spiritual leader could be this deviant, and yes, there is a victim here. But we don't think said victim will be living with emotional scars for the next several decades because of it. Seriously, a Rabbi totally got to second base with us at the premiere of Jaws II, and we're, like, totally well-adjusted.)

After being groped, the boy decided he could probably read about the movie on IMDB and high-tailed it ouf of the theater. He told a manager about the incident, who, in turn, contacted the fuzz. John Q. Law arrived in short order, played some shoot-em-ups in the arcade and arrested the old (alleged) pervert when he came out of the theater....crying like a bitch like the rest of you who went and saw the film.

Apparently Clogan became a priest in 1999 after his wife died. Guess dating just seemed like such a hassle. Besides, at 68, the internet can be pretty tricky. He then moved from Maine to Texas 2001 in search of a flock. He found one in St. Catherine of Siena here in town and later St. Joseph in Bryan, St. Joseph in Mason and Holy Trinity in Llano. Clogan has served at a church in Horseshoe Bay since last year, and while he's has never suffered charges of molestation or inapproriate behavior, it certainly seems like a lot of moving around. Of course, we know nothing about the church, so there's that. Oh, but we do love jesus juice, if that counts for anything.

Although there were no witnesses, the police say the boy's story checked out. How they came to that conclusion we're not real sure. Clogan has apparently hired a lawyer, and local church leaders are asking parisioners to pray for both Clogan and the boy during these hard times.

Amen.

61. Seriously?? I do it all the time, have all my life & sometimes prefer it.
I'm really just curious that you find it so unusual.

I like a lot of stuff my family isn't always jazzed about (not the shoot-em-up stuff they go for), so I frequently go by myself and enjoy it soooo much more. I don't have to be annoyed by my companion falling asleep (& snoring) or fidgeting in their seat the entire time.

I love going during the weekday when theaters are nearly empty or have only singular people like me (mostly women also).

Just asking because I am curious why you think it's not normal.

71. I didn't mean to imply there's anything wrong with going alone to a movie
just that in my experience (as a male) I find it highly unusual at least in my own peer group. Apparently mileage varies :D

I think girls are probably more likely to do it but I don't have any empirical evidence for that opinion, it's just my impression...

'Course I say that from my own anecdotal evidence, so I really don't know either!

I love movies, esp French art house cinema and David Lynch stuff - now, why am I always going alone??? hahahahaha ;-)

or are they some of the thousands of churches in the US that accept gays.

I ask because of the 4000 UCC churches in the US, half are open and afirming.

I don't know if baptists have a ratio of gay accepting churches.

There are lots of megachurches in the bible belt and beyond that support their "pastors" in a very la-ti-da lifestyle while most of the members just struggle to make ends meet.

How great it would be if he held a press conference to apologize for the hypocrisy and then declare that he will unapologetically live the life he damn well wants to from this point forward.

Thou shalt not solicit undercover cops

Not to pick on church folks, but this story already appears eight times in Nexis:

* OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An executive committee member of the Southern Baptist Convention was arrested on a lewdness charge for propositioning a plainclothes policeman outside a hotel, police said.
* Lonnie Latham, 59, senior pastor at South Tulsa Baptist Church, was booked into Oklahoma County Jail Tuesday night on a misdemeanor charge of offering to engage in an act of lewdness, police Capt. Jeffrey Becker said. Latham was released on $500 bail Wednesday afternoon.
* Latham, who has spoken out against homosexuality, asked the officer to join him in his hotel room for oral sex. Latham was arrested and his 2005 Mercedes automobile was impounded, Becker said.

Any number of parables, aphorisms, verses and sayings apply. The church's Website doesn't attack homosexuals, from what I can tell. There is, however, lots about following the Bible and real estate acquisitions.

Cowpokes After Hours
Art Miller documents a homoeroticism burning beneath the highway’s neon glare

Art Miller’s “Habana Series” closed this past weekend at ATM Gallery’s new Chelsea space, but the exhibition’s photographs can still be found on the gallery’s Web site at atmgallery.com and in its in-house portfolio of images.

ATM Gallery recently relocated to West 20th Street in Chelsea from its former home in the East Village, a refreshing change because in this new small gallery the focus is on the art, not the gallery’s architecture. I just happened to walk by and noticed five mysterious black and white photographs that lured me inside.

The images are strangely revealing and unfold very slowly. At first, they appear as documentary-styled photographs of ultra-masculine cowboys on the road, bedding down at a cheap motel. But gradually we realize that more is going on than just sleep. It seems that we are witnessing something hidden, something unspoken, something anonymous––and something as ancient as time.

Miller visited the Habana Inn, a motel in Oklahoma City, over a period of 17 months. By setting up a 35 mm camera inside his rented room he proceeded to capture the underground sexual charge of this otherwise anonymous motel. At night, rooms are rented by your cowboy next-door, curtains pulled back and doors wide open. Sitting in your room you can observe and be observed by men passing by as they stroll the common sidewalk around the balcony. The glass of the room’s window, which heightens the effect of anonymity, obscures the images, creating an effect reminiscent of the red-light district in Amsterdam where hookers stand in shop windows to be purchased. After dark the cruise is on.

99. Lonnie Latham has a Wikipedia entry already
Lonnie Latham
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Dr. Lonnie Latham serves as the senior pastor of South Tulsa Baptist Church, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a post he has held since 2002. Latham also serves on the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, one of four such members from Oklahoma.

History in the Tulsa Baptist Association

Lonnie Latham was elected director of missions for the Tulsa Baptist Association during their November 13-14, 2000 meeting. The meeting also saw the controversial adoption of the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message, a pivotal document in the Southern Baptist Convention's "Conservative Resurgance." According to one report, Latham has spoken out against expansion of tribal gaming in Oklahoma, as well as against homosexuality. In the latter vein, he supported the SBC's adoption of a policy encouraging Baptists to befriend gays and lesbians and "convert" them to a heterosexual lifestyle.

The September 16, 2001 edition of Tulsa World describes Latham as executive director of the Tulsa Metro Baptist Association. Clergy see spiritual rebirth as downcast Americans ask why (PDF).
