DUBAI DEAL GOING THROUGH EVEN WHILE INVESTIGATION TAKES PLACE!!!
The Dubai Port ‘Compromise’: A Dishonest Proposal

Make no mistake about it, the “face-saving” deal on the Dubai port imbroglio was concocted by the White House. It’s being spun to the press as a “offer” by Dubai Ports World. But the AP reports that “senior U.S. officials and DP World executives have closely coordinated their efforts in recent weeks.”

The deal is political, not substantive. It’s designed take some heat off the White House, not protect the security of the United States.

1. The deal would not actually be delayed. Dubai Ports World has just offered to alter its management structure until the review is completed. “The company said that during the renewed scrutiny, or until May 1, a London-based executive who is a British citizen would have authority over DP World’s U.S. operations. It pledged that Dubai executives would not control or influence company business in the U.S., but said it was entitled to all profits during the period.”

2. If the outcome is different, Dubai Ports World said it may sue. “In the legal papers sent to the White House, DP World said it would abide by the outcome of the lengthier review but indicated it could sue if the results were any different.”

3. The administration has already made up their mind. Unless Congress has a role, it’s meaningless. “ Schumer said Congress should have a chance after the review to approve or reject the administration’s decision. ‘If the report is completed and kept secret and only given to the president, who has already come out for the deal, it will not reassure Americans,’ Schumer said.”

Reasonable people can disagree about whether it makes sense to have the UAE run operations at U.S. ports. But the proposed ‘compromise’ is fundamentally dishonest.

1. And they'll succeed with their suit because....
Bushco signed the secret deal agreeing there be no investigation and/or Bush wouldn't stop the deal due to concerns for national security.

2. No surprise here--
the agreement was signed. There is no way that WP Dubai is walking away empty-handed. This is another example, just like the H*burton "no-bid contracts" where we, the people, get screwed and a surprising number of us apparently like it.

6. It seems to me
that they are "delaying" so that Bushco can twist some more arms. Notice Frist for example. At first he came out against this and all the rightwing talking heads were swooning over him for "protecting" our security and than a few days later he came out for it. No doubt in my mind that he's talking to other republicans and probably finding someway to make them be for this. This is the perfect time for them to do this before the 2006 midterms because they can use this too to their advantage by saying the democrats are rascists (see Bush) and are playing politics over security etc.

12. They don't need to twist any arms
Unitary Executive remember? It's not our government, it's Bush's government and he doesn't have to answer to anyone unless they are paying him shiploads of cold hard cash. The ports deal will go through because Bushco doesn't give a shit what anybody thinks, only how much money they'll get from it. Talk about for-profit presidency.

They'll use some of that money for accountants and lawyers to protect them from future punishment in case America ever wakes up. Stop this planet, I want to get off.

4. This is no surprise really. If they could have done this without
telling Bush (or anyone) at all, they would have done so.

The idea of Dubai suing the US is rather intreguing, however. So now we are in a real pickle. If Dubai winds up running the ports, we loose. If they do back down and cancel the deal with Dubai, the country loses as well with a possible law suit against one of the richest countries in the world.

It's like a movie script. Imagine if that did happen. Where would the trial take place? International Court? Gosh, I don't think Bushco would do so well in an international court since he's not exactly all that liked these days with many in that croud. Now that would be an interesting trial to watch...

In any event, it does not appear that there will be a lawsuit. The neocons have this signed, sealed and delivered and it may damage the GOP's in November (and give us more grounds for impeachment), but my guess is it's a go - regardless of how much noise is made against it.

5. Well, yeah. Doesn't mean they'll end up with the contracts
The takeover of a British company -- P&O -- by Dubai Ports World is a done deal.

We can't stop that. But whether they end up running our ports is theoretically up in the air.

8. Of course it's going to go through like everything else that
is against our nation's interests has gone through since the cockroach BFEE took over our country. This is something that had no compromise like the IWR, but compromise happened.

Whoopee! I feel so patriotically unAmerican right now.

10. They Have no Respect for Our Country
none at all... they can try to spin this all they want, but the obvious has been exposed. I hope they try to spin this further, because more of their base is getting disgusted.

11. I brought this up to a bot at work
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 12:38 PM by Sugarcoated
and their response was, "I suggest you go to Dept. of Tresury web site and read the proposal the jig is up - do your research."

Does anyone know how long this has been known? Or was it just a Bu$hbot being a Bu$hbot?

)edit for spelling)
