4. I'm sure he mourns privately for the lost soldiers
When he's all alone he probably bows his head in reverence and reflects on the human sacrifice that were caused by the true horrors of this war.
I'm sure since he was a peacetime Naval aviation instructor he can understand the hardships suffered in battle.
