Do you trust your local papers? |

Answer using your own words.
On edit: Do you trust your local paper more or less than you trust your local television news?

Tribune Media Company, very republican. Also owns the Stamford paper. Also owns three of the local television stations, and the entire chain of Advocate "alternative" news & arts weeklies from Fairfield County up into Vermont, the entire I-91 corridor.
Which alway begs the question...how can the same company do a scathing expose of Bush and Cheney in their "alternative" free weeklies, yet those same stories never seem newsworthy enough to put in the "real" daily newspaper. I don't get that.
Or, maybe I do.

The local paper here is a good news source and leans liberal. They endorsed Kerry, Gluba, and several Democratic candidates in 2004, they had many many articles and editorials denouncing a local school boards decision to sort of ban a childrens book which had a homosexual character in it. Overall, the Quad City Times is a pretty good paper. They have Molly Ivins, as well as Krauthammer. They have a good balance on their editorial page, in other words. That is what most of us ask for. They also do community minded things from time to time.

I'm pretty lucky. Both seem to have maintained a semblance of independence from the right wing noise machine..
Of course Newsday has it's residence point man for 'pub talking points, but they also have some clear thinking editorialists..

10. I read three papers a day |
|
and they are all predictable. The T-P of New Orleans is a fine publication offering editorial insight and scathing writing of local issues. Their LTTE's seem to be balanced. And all the other stuff, (Life, Sports, Money) is very well done. The Sun-Herald of Gulfport, while not as slick a production as the T-P covers the local issues very well and their LTTE's also are balanced. The local rag I get up the highway in a little city in Southwest Mississippi is great for finding out where the church fish frys are and their editorial content runs from far right to extremely far right. If you right a LTTE which remotely approves of a democrat or questions the judgement of anything done in city hall it won't be published.
To answer your question, I know exactly what I am getting with all three so I think it is fair to say that yes, I trust them.

11. The Plain Dealer - run by a Repuke Bushbot |
|
Gives full page eds to idiots like Kevin O Brien and features weekly columns by David Brooks and semi-weeklies to George F Will and Thomas Friedman.
My Avon Lake paper "The Press" was, as of late, run by a young Republican until he mercifully left. It was like a point-a-palooza every week.

It is a repug rag paper. It is the The Villages Daily Sun in Florida and today's front page features Kathryn Harris who was in the area at a fundraiser for her run for the Senate in Florida. For those of you who don't remember that witch's name, she was the person who was so instrumental in the Florida fraudulent vote count in Florida in 2000. The only reason I still get the paper is to see what sales are going on in the local stores.

and sure, I trust it. I'm the news editor and I write for it, and I know how hard we work to be sure to get out the truth. I even get to rant from my very liberal perspective - thanks for all the good leads, DU.
The Pine Bluff Commercial is better known as the Pine Bluff Comical. It fits.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette leans so far right it fell off the edge long ago. They write editorials in the headlines. Trust them? Nope.

The major local paper is a Scaife owned rag. The other paper (Post Gazette) is pretty good but neither show much desire to investigate the facts on any story. I'm sad to say that I commended the Scaife rag for a balanced editorial policy when I moved back here. At the time they were well balanced on the op-ed pages, they even carried Molly Ivins! Well before the 2004 election, the most moderate voice on the op-ed pages was George Will. I don't think there are 100 papers in the country that would be worth paying for.

"Do you want to be beaten with a stick or rubber hose?" The local paper, "the Daily Oklahoman," or more appropriately referred to as "The Daily Disappointment" has been named the "Worst Daily Newspaper in the US" by the Columbia School of Journalism. That sets the bar pretty low. but local TV is just pandering, sensationalism, pseudo expose and gimmicks, you watch KOCO, KWTV, and KFOR and not be sure they are literate. Too many "Dog Psychic" stories, and "How Prayer can help Schools" segments.
On the other hand, the Tulsa World is pretty good, though as I state above the bar is way low.
I also subscribe to the Taos News, a weekly that is fantastic, no wire service, just good local news and top flight coverage of protests at Rummy's ranch. The editor, Gerald Gardner Jr. is great.

26. I only read the Trend and the Philly Inquirer |
|
The Trend really isn't news-oriented.
I have mixed thoughts about the Philly Inquirer. Satullo and the rest of the editorial board are moderate Dem. I'd like to see them use stronger rhetoric. And recently, they added an extreme conservative to the Inquirer staff: Kevin Ferris. I e-mailed the paper about there being no liberals of that level to cancel him out. Inquirer columnist Trudy Rubin is another fairly moderate Democrat. She wouldn't call for withdrawal from Iraq. Finally, analyst Dick Polman seems to be back to putting a conservative spin on things. So my trust in the Inquirer isn't high.

Kansas City Star is nothing more than a fluffy city newsletter filled with puff pieces, on par with church newsletters. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, there is a regular protest of the newspaper's offices because it refuses to print the Downing Street Minutes.
