Fundies starting their own town NOT KIDDING |
|
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2058771,00.htmlA FORMER marine who was raised by nuns and made a fortune selling pizza has embarked on a £230m plan to build the first town in America to be run according to strict Catholic principles. Abortions, pornography and contraceptives will be banned in the new Florida town of Ave Maria, which has begun to take shape on former vegetable farms 90 miles northwest of Miami. >
snip
Monaghan believes he has more than the law on his side. “I think it’s God’s will to do this,” he said.
While a part of me says go ahead fundies, leave the rest of civilization to the majority like us, who are tired of your hypocrisy. Another part says that this is seriously an abomination, a town governed by Religious Dogma is insane.

Hell, I should move there, open a porn/contraceptive/sex toy store and abortion clinic, and let them try to shut me down.
One lawsuit later, I could retire.

The nation does not live under colonial law. . .nor has it ever lived under theocratic dictation. Even Utah was denied statehood until it changed the forced practice of certain religious policy.

But planning a local community based on religion is part of freedom.
Barring the practice of other faiths within it, however, would be a violation of the first amendment, unless it were a private community/commune, in which case you might be able to make a case.

15. Libertarians Talked About trying to take over New Hampshire |
|
There was talk about libertarians moving to New Hampshire and eventually trying to take over the state and some local governments.
There also is a group of ultra fundamentalists who are trying to do the same thing - I think in part of South Carolina.
There already are some towns/school districts in New York State where there is a clear majority of orthodox Jews. A court refused to let the State give one such school district special treatment in funding public school students. I think there only was one public school student in that district.

Hold the 'roni and the "Meat Topping Balls", though.
There's a part of me that kind of likes the idea of the fundies being all in one place. Then they can be blockaded in, their gates sealed up, and left to rely on their own neo-con goodwill.
Even if that isn't likely to happen, it may actually reduce over all the red vote load in very mixed precincts as fundies congregate in very strong red precincts (where the votes may be 95% or higher for a particular candidate). However, that means that a formerly marginal precinct, that goes 50.5% to the neo-con may actually end up going 55 or 60 percent liberal, because that small portion of the population that worked hard to get neo-cons elected moved to a like-minded community.

Maybe more fundies ought to have their own towns to run in any totalitarian way that they want to. I hope though that the states that these towns are in make it a rule that when someone wants to leave that they don't stop them and force them to stay. Also, they need to follow the basic laws of our government, like no statuatory rape, like marrying thirteen year old girls or incest like uncles marrying neices. Things like that.
I too was raised by nuns and I know that they are going to love having everything they read and every movie they go to censored. They are going to love being told when they can eat and what they can eat on each season of the year. The women will love the fights over short hemlines. (I had many with the nuns.) The men are going to love waiting for marriage to have sex. Well, you all get the drift.
Let them go for it as long as they leave the rest of us sinners alone. The Amish have had their own communities for more that a century.

Like others on this thread, Im all for putting these people in one place so they can cannibalize each other instead of being a pain to the rest of society.

Seriously, I'm really not sure what to make of this. On the one hand, it would be completely private, I don't think he's planning on taking any public money whatsoever. And nobody could say they were forced to move there. We've always treasured freedom of association. On the other hand, I strongly oppose the integration of church & state. But there is precedent for this, I think - I don't think you would be allowed to open up a porno shop, or sell birth control in an Amish town.

If they can flaunt state law here and make a community where they do whatever they please, why can't we do the same thing in another community?" Then turn around and take over another community and have it so that one could have things like legalized nudity and public sex, as well as prostitution, and rights to smoke dope wherever you can normally smoke cigarettes (and not directly affect those standing next to you). Have some gambling houses, etc. too. Force a "living wage" minimum wage and have rent control, and tax religious institutions too.

Unlike the Amish, which are relatively self-contained and self-sufficent, I doubt the people attracted to such a community could keep it running. Wonder how long the economy there will function until they have some kind of fiscal meltdown? Or will they all be exposed to Evil Modern Society-tm by working outside the community. Seems to me that businesses wouldn't exactly flock to the location...
Mother Nature may take care of their problems, global warming will flood them out.
Somehow reminds me of a old joke...genie grants three wishes- 1. put all the assholes in Texas(or Russia, or...), 2. build wall around it that nothing can get in or out of, 3. and then "fill 'er up" with water.
