Guantanamo: American Gulag

<snip> I am one of those lawyers. I represent six Kuwaiti prisoners, each of whom has now spent nearly four years at Guantanamo. It took me 2 1/2 years to gain access to my clients, but now I have visited the prison camp 11 times in the last 14 months. What I have witnessed is a cruel and eerie netherworld of concrete and barbed wire that has become a daily nightmare for the nearly 500 people swept up after 9/11 who have been imprisoned without charges or trial for more than four years. It is truly our American gulag.
<snip>
Every prisoner I've interviewed claims to have been badly beaten and subjected to treatment that only could be called torture, by Americans, from the first day of U.S. captivity in Pakistan and Afghanistan. They said they were hung by their wrists and beaten, hung by their ankles and beaten, stripped naked and paraded before female guards, and given electric shocks. At least three claimed to have been beaten again upon arrival in Guantanamo. One of my clients, Fayiz Al Kandari, now 27, said his ribs were broken during an interrogation in Pakistan. I felt the indentation in his ribs. "Beat me all you want, just give me a hearing," he said he told his interrogators.
<snip>
When I met with Fawzi three weeks ago, the tubes were out of his nose. I told him I was thankful that after five months he had ended his hunger strike. He looked at me sadly and said, "They tortured us to make us stop." At first, he said, they punished him by taking away his "comfort items" one by one: his blanket, his towel, his long pants, his shoes. They then put him in isolation. When this failed to persuade him to end the hunger strike, he said, an officer came to him Jan. 9 to announce that any detainee who refused to eat would be forced onto "the chair." The officer warned that recalcitrant prisoners would be strapped into a steel device that pulled their heads back, and that the tubes would be forced in and wrenched out for each feeding. "We're going to break this hunger strike," the officer told him.

Republicans are assholes, but they're Americans. Just because they are moronic enough to support the Bush Administration doesn't make them my enemies.

I will say this tho': If you support this administration, you are a deeply flawed person.

5. A little food for thought
I truly believe that supporters of the bush administration are not averse to the whittling away of constitutional liberties of American citizens. I easily place them and religious zealots in the column of domestic ENEMIES of the constitution. As a veteran that really pisses me off, so the enemy thing does not trouble me at all. If they are my fellow Americans then they will not fuck with the constitution.

11. Now you're sounding like a Republican.
Let's get serious here.

Republicans love American and he constitution just as much as we do, the difference is that they are misguided asshats who are willing to trade freedom for the illusion of safety. They are not enemies, merely people who simply need to be educated.

Calling people enemies does nothing for the debate and is a step toward anarchy.

If a Republican calls you an enemy, then take the high road.

14. Them's fighting words!!
I'm looking at my oath of reenlistment that I have engraved on a coin right next to my shadow box encasing the flag presented to me during my retirement ceremony three years ago. It clearly states - "I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC" I do not believe republicans love the constitution. It is an inconvenience to them. It allows people not like them to be free, therefore they have no use for it.

Do you know how you "trade freedom for the illusion of safety?" You fuck with the constitution. If you fuck with the constitution, you are my enemy. Defending the constitution is the high road my fellow American.

If a republican calls me an enemy because of their beliefs I'll congratulate them on their astute observation.

I truly do not believe bush supporters have any appreciation of the importance of constitutional liberties. Jump on in Spag68, we need your two cents worth.

THAT is spot on, BOSSHOG! It IS an inconvenience and that's why the Federalist society worked for the last 25 years prepping Roberts and ScAlito for the SCOTUS. LOOK at where they are.:scared: THEY HATE THE CONSTITUTION. "It's just a g-d damn piece of paper."

Repugs I know not only don't LVOE the Constitution, they see it as an obstacle to what they want this country to be. Tolerance is one thing, but sooner or later you need to stand up to protect our fundamental values and rights. People working to erode these are my enemies. And yours, whether you recognize it or not.

37. Newt Gingrich said the current era reminds him of
the two decades preceding the U.S. Civil War. I'm sure many people in the North said of the folks at Fort Sumter, ca. 1860: "Southerners are assholes, but they're Americans. Just because they are moronic enough to support slavery doesn't make them my enemies."

An American is one that stands up for the truest ideals and values of the nation.

That they call themselves "Americans" does not mean that one who truly stands up for American values is not one.

Don't let them do that to you.

13. Personally, I believe those who support BushCO hate America,...
,...and American laws, values and ideals.

Torture is NOT an American ideal or value and is illegal.

An aggressive, unilateral war without cause is NOT an American ideal or value and is illegal.

Defrauding an entire nation (the U.S.A.), her people and her representatives is NOT an American ideal or value and is illegal.

Defying the Constitution and federal law by spying on Americans is NOT an American ideal or value and is illegal.

Endangering national security by out a CIA agent and op is NOT an American ideal or value and is illegal.

Favoring the extremely wealthy on the backs of common wo/men is NOT an American ideal or value.

Placing incompetent cronies in high positions is NOT an American ideal or value.

"Losing" billions of dollars is NOT an American ideal or value.

Cheating is NOT American ideal or value.

I could go on and on and on.

This administration is ANTI-AMERICAN is so many ways. So, I figure those who support it MUST HATE AMERICA.

Those that support the administration after having access to and awareness to the crimes they perpetrate are my enemy.

Those, however, that do not know what they do, are not my enemy but are instead the meek upon which I need to reach out to the most to spread the word of truth. They are in fact the ones that need us the most, and I never consider those that need help the most my enemies.

When we see how much he's dropped in the past year or so, we have to must realize then that all of those now against him were at that time supporting him, and would've been considered our "Enemies" based on the OP's standpoint. But they weren't, they just needed more time to be informed and become aware.

51. I agree with you, 5X.
Anyone who still supports/defends BushCo at this late stage in the game, after all the information that's come out in the last year confirming how corrupt and dangerous they are, is being willfully ignorant for superficial, selfish reasons. Bushbots can't even use the excuse of being loyal Republicans because the GOP is no more -- it's been taken over by Neocons who are nothing but militant liars and thieves. Neocons respect the Constitution less than you or I respect a roll of toilet paper. It doesn't get more anti-American than that in my book.

Those who support Bush** are enemies to America. MY enemy.
