Paper: Coast Guard Has Port Co. Intel Gaps
By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Citing broad gaps in U.S. intelligence, the Coast Guard cautioned the Bush administration that it was unable to determine whether a United Arab Emirates-owned company might support terrorist operations, a Senate panel said Monday.

The surprise disclosure came during a hearing on Dubai-owned DP World's plans to take over significant operations at six leading U.S. ports. The port operations are now handled by London-based Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company.

"There are many intelligence gaps, concerning the potential for DPW or P&O assets to support terrorist operations, that precludes an overall threat assessment of the potential" merger," an undated Coast Guard intelligence assessment says.

"The breadth of the intelligence gaps also infer potential unknown threats against a large number of potential vulnerabilities," the document says.<snip>

10. What else are they hiding? I think the whole deal should be
shot down immediately. A 45-day grace period is no longer necessary.

14. I signed up for his newsletter - here is tonight:
Lou Dobbs Tonight
Monday, February 27, 2006

Dubai Ports World has asked for an official 45-day
investigation of the deal that would give it control of six
U.S. ports. Tonight we’ll take a look at what this review will
mean, if anything, since the deal was approved the first time
around.

We’ll also have a full report on why the proposed sale of our
ports to a state-run foreign company is a consequence of
America’s broken trade policy.

Despite being our key defense against terrorism, the Coast
Guard hasn’t received the same level of funding as other areas
of Homeland Security. We’ll report on what the Coast Guard has
asked for in terms of funding versus what they’ve been given.

Senator Carl Levin says the Bush administration ignored the law
requiring a complete national security review of the port deal.
The Senator joins us tonight.

With immigration reform legislation up for debate in Congress,
Senator John McCain will join immigrant families and workers
from across New York City for a town hall meeting and rally.
We’ll show you a full report on the immigration legislation
currently making its way through Congress.

And Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano shares her plans for
dealing with the illegal immigration crisis with Lou tonight.

Please visit http://cnn.com/loudobbstonight to see
the series of events leading up to the purchase of six U.S.
ports by the United Arab Emirates-based Dubai Ports World.

11. My guess is BUSH/CHENEY/SNOW made the deal.
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 05:59 PM by in_cog_ni_to
Bush is just playin' stoopid. He KNEW about this deal. Otherwise, why would he say he'd VETO it if he didn't know the details? HE KNEW.

13. I think you are right. Otherwise it makes no sense at all.
So if he knew this info from the Coast Guard and STILL went along, tantamount to treason I would say. IMHO

20. Well, he might be counting on the "bullshit!!!" rule--that politics stops
at the water's edge; that is is impolite to criticize the Prez while he is travelling abroad. They've used that one before, but hell, they did it to Clinton all the time. So screw them!
