"Ninety percent of the population...has been displaced."
So in his interview with Brian Williams today, Michael Brown revealed that on Tuesday, August 30, during a secure conference call, his first words to Idiot Son regarding Katrina were:

"Mr. President, my estimate is that 90 percent — 90 percent — of the population of New Orleans has now been displaced."

After Idiot Son responds "90 percent?" Michael Brown replies "Yes sir, I believe it is that bad. That's how bad it is."

Yet despite this warning, and the warnings that he received before Katrina and in the immediate aftermath of Katrina, George W. Bush still had to be shown a DVD of various newscasts from NOLA, to make him see the reality of what was happening on the ground.

Clearly, this calls into question his mental capacity to understand and grasp important information.

If Bush couldn't comprehend and understand that 90% of the residents of NOLA had been displaced, do we really want him to be the one carrying the nuclear football and having the codes?

I think his inability to understand and grasp vital information should be an impeachable offense in itself.

Sorry for the long rant D.U. family, but I'm just simply amazed right now by this.

2. Bad news for the election districts in the south.
Displaced people ruining their carefully drawn and redrawn lines.

3. But what worries me a lot...
Is whether these displaced Americans will bother to register & vote in their new cities.

They are so busy trying to re-build their lives: find new employment, new homes, etc....and I just wonder if voting will weigh heavily on their minds.

If you are setting your roots down in a new city, and you're making working 2 jobs to get back on your feet, and maybe you're finding new schools for your kids, etc: Is your main priority of the day going to be making a trip to the local DMV to get a voter registration card or something?

I've thought about this a lot...and I'm just worried.

6. The more decide not to return, the fewer will return to vote in LA
And the deader New Orleans will become (or it will become a city of rural immigrants fresh from Oaxaca, living in trailer parks on the outskirts of the de-zoned and demolished city areas, with no connection to the life of the city itself.) Think a combination of Detroit and Miami.

8. Thanks for posting that. Now I have a request for our Moderators on here
Perhaps we should sticky that information in the GD area...that way if people who have been displaced happen to come on here, they will see it.

And perhaps it should be on the Democratic Underground page as well.

That is vital information!!

12. Just for clarification here...
I don't think he ASKED to see the DVD.

The way I remember it being reported, White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett realized Bush didn't understand the reality of what was happening on the ground, so to make him understand, he made him a DVD.

Ok....yep, here it is from Newsweek magazine:

(September 19, 2005 issue- How Bush Blew It):

"The reality, say several aides who did not wish to be quoted because it might displease the president, did not really sink in until Thursday night. Some White House staffers were watching the evening news and thought the president needed to see the horrific reports coming out of New Orleans. Counselor Bartlett made up a DVD of the newscasts so Bush could see them in their entirety as he flew down to the Gulf Coast the next morning on Air Force One."

15. Here's why I respectfully disagree
We, the general American public, all understood the reality of what was happening in NOLA.

I think we were all pretty much glued to our television sets, watching people cry out for help outside the Convention Center and the Superdome.

We were constantly graving any information about NOLA: reading the latest news reports online, etc.

And so my question is: if we, the general public, understood what was happening, why didn't Bush?

And that's why I'm questioning his intellectual capacity and his ability to grasp information.

I understand your point though.

I'm sure he did comprehend what Brown said, he just didn't give a shit; didn't care. He had no feelings of empathy or concern. Ordinary American citizens mean nothing to him.
