Ann Coulter speaks at Western Michigan University: A review

Ann Coulter is smart. She's witty. She thinks quickly on her feet.

But after hearing her speak Wednesday at Western Michigan University, I found she's not very thoughtful and not very nice.

Put her conservative political agenda aside. What took me aback was the way Coulter treated audience members during the question-and-answer session. The audience was respectful; the questions, even from those who obviously disagreed with Coulter, were heartfelt. Coulter, on the other hand, referred to one person as "Missy" and another as "Babycakes." She pronounced one question to be so silly that she hooted the questioner must be majoring in engineering rather than history -- and the question was from a fellow Republican.

In short, Coulter behaved a lot like a girl who's queen bee of her sixth-grade class, right down to the contemptuous put-downs, snotty attitude and disdainful toss of blond hair. That's not attractive in an 11-year-old, much less a 40-something woman....more

6. I've said it before. If I had a child in U with tuition rates escalating

as they are, I would be suing for a tuition rebate if she was paid 40K to speak at a U.

7. It never fails to amaze me how much abuse people are willing

to take from celebrities. I use to listen to "Christian" radio. I hated listening to music all the time and NPR switches to symphony music at about 9 am. TV is very boring and Air America was not on locally. That is my excuse for listen to the "Christian" right.

But here is my observation. Dr Laura, Rush Limball and almost all the hosts were rude and demeaning to their callers. People would call in with interesting questions and concerns and they would get reamed. As if just by calling in they were idiots. Yet the calls kept coming in. I think each caller thought they were different. They thought they wouldn't get insulted because their questions and opinions were just so insightful. People listened to hear the callers get insulted. That is the schick, that is the hook. Hearing all that yelling is stimulating and breaks up a normally dull day.

The callers get angry, you can hear it in their voice and they will probably never listen to this host again. But there was another idiot waiting on hold to get his comeuppance. I figure, eventually these hosts will have insulted everyone in the US and their audience will have gone away.

15. you're right. It's theatre

it's what sells. That's why we see Coulter on the shows and not the more thoughtful conservatives like David Brooks. She's not well-informed. She could never...never...go one-on-one with someone like Bill Clinton. He'd bury her in facts. Her schtick is burlesque.
But it plays with her ill-informed audience.
To the rest of the world, she's a sad joke, reflecting the worst of America.

Another guy did this sort of thing way better about 20-30 years ago. His name was Don Rickles, except the difference is that he made you laugh on purpose.

This guy Coulter just makes you laugh out of sheer delirium because a) his kind runs the country and b) he doesn't get fired for calling people ragheads or "old Arabs" and c) he lives in mansions for doing nothing but being a flaming whorehouse-quality asshole.

I graduated in 1986, when it was still a moderate kind of place with a liberal student newspaper. The conservatives took over the paper a couple of years after I left. They have a large business program there, and it is West Michigan, so there are more conservative students there than at Wayne or Eastern.

That just goes to show what a bitch Ann Coulter is. She even insults the people who like her.

When I went there, WMU was a major party school. Never as much as MSU (I know of few schools that can top the Spartan's party-hardiness and just plain depravity), but still wild. They've changed since then-one of my coworkers in her 20s said that they are very strict now about student behavior.

Hes a phoney and he gets money for being outlandish, much like some clown at the circus.
