Is it illegal to print a charity's name on a t-shirt? |
My son has an upcoming Bar Mitzvah in May. He has chosen Habitat for Humanity (through Randi Rhodes.. to help Katrina victims) as his tzedakah charity. I would like to print up Habitat for Humanity t-shirts as a favor, but need to know if that's legal? I wouldn't use their Logo, but design my own. Is that legal? Can I use their charity name?

2. Not without permission |
But permission usually isn't too tough to get. Most reputable charities will want to know a little bit about what you're doing. They don't want just anybody silkscreening their logo on shirts and going around saying "I'm raising money for Habitat For Humanity!" But as long as you can demostrate that you're legit, they shouldn'g give you a problem.

3. What a generous thing for him to do. |
Contact Habitat and ask them if it is ok with them. If you send the money to them, there probably will be no problem. The problem is when someone uses an organizations name to collect donations and then doesn't give them to the organization. Thanks again to your son.

4. Katrina victims deserve it. |
After watching the last Oprah show, he made his decision that that was the most important thing he could do. They need all the help they can get.:(
I'll call Habitat and get their permission. Thank you!:hi:

8. I know! He was sick when he saw that show. |
When he told me that Habitat for Humanity for Katrina victims was what he decided was his charity...I almost started crying. It warmed my heart. It was because he saw Oprah's show. She touched him, that's for sure. It was one POWERFUL program. I sobbed through the entire show!

He should email the show -- they may read it.

6. It might be just as cost effective to buy t-shirts directly from Habitat. |
After adding the cost of buying the shirts, screen printing, etc., you may be just as well off to buy from Habitat. That way they get the benefits too.

7. I'm not screen printing them. They will be small iron-on transfers |
at the shoulder area. I'm doing them myself. $$$$ is an issue here. I ordered t-shirts, heavy weight cotton Hanes shirts for $1.55 each and a pack of transfer paper is $24.00. 25 kids.....makes the shirts around $2.80 each if I add in the ink. :) Habitat's shirts are $11.00-$13.00. 25 kids = $325.00. We have party favors already and this was just to intertwine his charity into the party since he just decided which charity he wished to support. I have already bought Habitat for Humainty key chains and magnets to give to guests and will need to order other (small) Habitat items , but the t-shirts were over my budget at this point....since this is ending up to be as costly as a wedding.:scared: I thought even though we couldn't buy their t-shirts, these would help too...indirectly, by spreading the name and cause for KATRINA victims. Katrina will be part of my logo. :)
