"George Bush doesn't like black people"
Actually I don't think this is strictly true. What he doesn't like is poor people. Poor black people, poor white people, poor any kind of people, he doesn't like 'em. What surprises me is how much quicker poor blacks have figured this out than poor whites. Almost all blacks are not buying the bullshit as evidenced by * 2% approval rating among blacks. It's harder to gauge his approval rating among poor whites but its gotta be a lot higher than that. So what's the deal? Are blacks smarter than whites? Or do they just have a more fine tuned crap detector from years of being lied to?

1. Actually, he LOVES poor white people . . .
When he needs votes.

Too bad for them though, if one of the cronies needs cash, which would require them to spill blood in a desert or be left high and dry when the local plant closes.

4. Poor whites have been snookered for years
Especially in the south. What the elite have always pulled is the race card. Sadly, whites continue to buy into it. Hatred seems to make people stupid, I guess.

people hate. And it is not only in the south. However it works, the results are the same.

24. Actually the Midwest and West is redder than the South.
What do they hate?

I think it is more of a church thing in the South than a racial thing. For the most part the white churches preach what is good for Bush and the black churches preach what is good for the congregation.

Please don't buy into the stereotype of the white southerner as a bigot. That is what Rove would like for you to do. It is a divisive attitude that won't win votes.

7. If West really wanted to make a statement he would have said "poor people"
There were plenty of poor whites down in the gulf states suffering.

West is an idiot because he failed to see the real deal. It's not a black/white issue. It's a rich/poor issue.

13. Don't call him an idiot
I agree that race doesn't play much of a role here, but at least the guy stood up and said what was on his mind. That's a lot more than we can expect from most of our elected officials these days. And it started this very kind of conversation for some people who may have never given it much thought either way.

Let's encourage the people who have the guts to stand up, even if we don't entirely agree.

14. I will. He could have made an actual impact by saying "poor".
It's hard to sell the racism aspect when so many poor whites were also out there in that mess...

It was a class issue, not a race issue.

17. This is addressed in his current Playboy interview.
West says he said that, and the interviewer corrects him and he responds that poor people in New Orleans are disproportionately black.

FYI.

22. So does that fact negate that it was a class issue?
Edited on Tue Feb-28-06 01:23 PM by Beelzebud
I don't think so.

Poor people were left behind. It didn't matter what color their skin was.

28. I don't disagree.
But it's not a story if someone says Bush doesn't care about poor people. Everyone knows that.

But accusing the President of racism?

Now that's news. :)

21. That was racism in the media. The actual victims in the storm were poor.
Regardless of race.

Yes the media was racist as hell for printing the stories they did.

But the failure of our government was not over race. It was an issue of class...

30. Race does matter
as long as poor = black, then poor whites are not seen.

The US gov't can haul ass in California (earthquakes 1989, 1991, 1994) and the east coast hurricanes (Hugo, Andrew, David, etc.) and even render aid on halfway around the world in 48 hours, but fall down for the Gulf Coast? Five days at that? I don't buy it. :eyes:

One of the standing arguments is that the gov't would have been much faster if a large number of those seen on the news were white. Correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't see any white faces in the Superdome or the Convention Center.

23. Finally, and minorities need to exploit this issue only.
When poor people are pitted against each other, and racial inflammatory language is introduced, the real culprit of their disparity slides by without any consequence. Each race of poor people scapegoat the other race for the cause of their problems, and WEALTHY ELITE puppet masters laugh all the way to their bank, their wealthy elite circles, and their bought and paid for government.

Their is an important lesson about poverty in the 1960s. Nothing could be accomplished when it was framed as a racial issue, rather than a poverty issue for all races needing a change in government policies and direction.

When a race is placed along side the poverty issue, the poverty issue is immediately dilluted and ignored in the name of racial equality. Which translates into a governmental policy and direction to make each race equally poor, without addressing poverty issue itself. Which only continues the vicious cycle that the WEALTHY ELITE benefit by and enjoy.

10. The black community caught on to Shrub immediately.
The mystery - to me - are the poor, white people. There they are, sitting in a cold apartment or run-down trailer home, barely making ends meet, losing jobs, losing health care, losing medicine, no hope for a decent education, sending their kids to die in Shrub's war and yet they continue to vote for Republicans.

It must be watching those cars go around and around in circles and believing that wrestling is real.

I don't have a frickin clue.

16. Kanye said "George Bush Doesn't CARE ABOUT black people"
This has gotta be the most misquoted quote ever. People misquote it as "hates", "Doesn't like"...

He said he doesn't care, and that is most accurate. I don't think Bush or his ilk could care less about black people one way or the other. They don't care about poor whites, either. As long as their pockets are being lined, that's all they care about. There was no money it for them to do anything about New Orleans, so they didn't.

Look at Iraq. They invaded it, murdering tens of thousands in the process, supposedly to protect us from Saddam's mythical WMDs and to free them from a despot. But you don't really think for a second that Bush cares about Iraqis do you?

27. I was behind a car that had Vote Republican
and as I inched up closer to that car, I was thinking to myself, oh, boy, another old, angry white male who blames everyone else for his miserable life. I always take a look at those with rightwing bumper stickers...they're almost always old, angry white men gripping the wheel with clenched jaws.
Well, this was a middle-aged woman.
And above the Vote Republican, there was smaller text that read: Leave no Millionaire Behind
VOTE REPUBLICAN
