from the AUAf web site http://www.auaf.edu.af/

"The American University of Afghanistan will be the first English language university in the country offering a four year liberal arts-based program for students from Afghanistan and abroad.

The initial majors will be in Business Administration, and Information Communication Technology. The university will also offer a Masters degree in Business and a variety of Professional Development Programs.

All courses will be in English and the majority of students will enroll in a one year Pre-Academic Program to increase English language fluency and reinforce study skills.

The university will admit the first students in 2006."

from the Employment Opportunities link http://www.auaf.edu.af/about/opportunities.html
"Salary and benefits: Commensurate with previous salary and experience, plus USAID hazard pay (25% of base salary) and post differential (25% of base salary). Furnished housing, transportation and health insurance. Hazard pay and post differential based on USAID policy is subject to change."

So...we're going to set up a Stepford University to train MBAs? Just what a war-torn, impovershed country needs. And no classes in their native language. Maybe when they stop shooting teachers who teach women, that hazard pay will sound more reasonable.

1. Sounds ok to me.
They have enough Islamic scholars. The first thing they need is some people that can navigate the waters of international trade and set up some sound business practices; produce great widgets, and you still have to sell them. Get enough business-savvy folks, maybe they'll push for deeds and that'll provide a basis for loan collateral and businesses can acquire enough capital to build something beyond what's needed for the survival of a single family based on either small retail trade or mud brick production.

Arguably they need engineers, but what kind? Electrical? Mechanical? Chemical? Well, yes, but all of those things require labs and resources. Business and IT? Take in some lap tops, textbooks, and subscribe to a few journals. Voila.

As for native language--which? Dari? Hazara? Pushtu? Tadjik? Uzbek? Some other language? Should every linguistic group has a separate university, however small?

Pakistan hasn't quite worked out its own language muddle yet for 'varsity' education, neither has India. Even some Arab countries have higher ed in English (and not just "English language studies", either). If not English, then French, or Russian, or one of the other 'big' languages. It's not such a big deal for business, unless "international business" is lurking in the context. But for sciences and engineering ... well, there aren't really many journals of international renown in molecular biology, genetics, or even statistic, in Arabic or Urdu. Much less Pashtu.

The MBA is a bit much, I agree with you on that point. First, get something like GAAP instituted, whatever they decide is properly "GA" for their "AP".

2. Maybe an A&M would do most good. Why don't they check with the UN? nt
