Who thinks Alito will be confirmed, and why?
With all of the current controversies with the * administration, I thought MAYBE it may make it harder for him to pass his supreme court nominee. Then again, maybe not. Just wondered what others thought on this issue.

Just getting opinions.

Thanks!

1. I think the Dems are going to pull out the stops to stop him.
Much has been revealed to cause them to oppose Alito. However, I have no doubt the Repubs will utilize the nuclear option and then all hell will beak loose. This could be the one point where the Dems can flex their collective muscle. However, have no doubt that Ben Nelson will vote with the Republicans, as usual.

My prediction? The Repubs will shove him through utilizing the nuclear option.

4. Yes
The senate is, largely, composed of criminals and enablers--A very weak congress, in terms of human rights and democratic reform.

18. Of Course, Not!
No, I wouldn't. Just sometimes I don't know if I'm overwhelmed with the drastic daily scandals and changes or ranting, and raving myself.

No, EST. I couldn't do that to any of you, my fellow Americans, my love for my country or myself.

Thank you. You're 1 sentence just shook me back to life!

5. This Thought Makes Me Ill...
Honestly, if Alito is nominated me & the pets are moving to Canada.

Alito is seriously bad for America in so many ways.

MoveOn's Online Petition against nomination: http://political.moveon.org/stopalito/
People for American Way's PDF thoughts: http://media.pfaw.org/stc/AlitoPreliminary.pdf
and their online thoughts: http://www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_A._Alito,_Jr.
Some blogging over at the Wash Post: http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/campaignforthecourt/?nav=hptile

He's seriously conservative. Would probably luv to rid us of Social Security.
Lousy record for the working folks, women, minorities, you name it.

http://www.c-span.org/ had a live panel of various University professors all against his nomination.

The list goes on and on...

7. Yep.
But barely. Absent some earth-shattering revelation, the numbers aren't there to stop it. Slim chance Alito will blow the hearings, but possible.

8. I think he will be confirmed...
...but by a much smaller margin than Roberts. Ben Nelson will vote aye and I'm guessing a few others will but I'm sure Feingold, Kohl, Leahy, and quite a few other aye votes on Roberts will vote no.

I would also guess that Chafee will vote no. He has an endorsement from NARAL that I doubt he wants to lose.

The thing is, while I don't think ScAlito will get 60 votes, the Democrats will probably agree to a time agreement and avoid a filibuster. If they do, it will end up like Clarence Thomas. If they do stick together and filibuster, well then Alito won't end up on the court. The nuclear option will never go down.

The only hope we have is to delay the Alito confirmation until after the midterm elections but I dont see that happening.

here's why: the ABA just released a Grade A on Alito's record today.

so much for an independent bar association.

21. Most likely
I don't see any outrage over the wiretapping so it's unlikely we'll be able to muster up a public opposition to Alito. I had some hope on that and think the Senate is hoping for that issue to catch fire. Otherwise, I think we're going to have to lose everything and start over, sad to say. People seem to feel too disconnected from their government and how it affects their daily lives. As long as they can go to work and go to the Walmart and take a camping trip in the summer, they're free and everything is working as it should.

22. Investigate spygate first!
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 09:22 PM by PWRinNY
Please write to your senators and demand that they hold off on any Alito votes until AFTER Bush's illegal wiretaps are investigated and hearings are held. Include Specter in these requests. Bush should not be allowed to put someone in a lifetime position to further erode our liberty while he himself needs to be investigated. Accountability must come first. Confirming Alito is not a priority, as O'Connor will stay until she has a replacement.

23. I will--
I know many believe he's getting on the bench, no matter what. But that doesn't mean I can't have my voice heard in terms of stopping it--maybe it will help.
