2. Maybe, but only after he's personally evicted every Mexican from the US
I gave up on Lou a while back, when his "All Immigration, All The Time" format got to be too much for me to take.

5. I thought I read that Pres. Clinton wasn't for the UAE Ports deal
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 11:23 AM by AndyA
And that he just advised them they needed to ask for another investigation. It's my understanding both Clintons are on record as being against the deal.

Yep - here it is, from the article:

"Mr Clinton’s spokesman said: “President Clinton is the former president of the US and as such receives many calls from world leaders and leading figures every week. About two weeks ago, the Dubai leaders called him and he suggested that they submit to the full and regular scrutiny process and that they should put maximum safeguards and security into any port proposal.”

He added that Mr Clinton supported his wife’s position on the deal and that “ideally” state-owned companies would not own US port operations."

Let's not let the facts get blurred in this - we don't need to give the neocons any fuel!

7. Lou and Congressman Hunter
talked about Clinton Yesterday, but here's Markey too

In 1998. HUNTER: ... when the Chinese communist government was buying or trying to buy the naval base at Long Beach, the closed naval base. We stopped that, even though the Clinton administration supported it.

We put that in as an amendment to the Armed Services Bill and we stopped them. We tried to stop Hutchison Whampoa, which actually was the second highest bidder, an American company from Arkansas was the highest. We understand that money was exchanged.

DOBBS: We want to put this in context. You're referring to 1998. The company was COSCO. The target was Long Beach. And you successfully got the legislation passed through the House. Ultimately, it was agreed to by the Senate and you stopped it.

HUNTER: And the president signed that.

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0603/01/ldt.01.html

DOBBS: You have introduced legislation on port security. You have put forward legislation to inspect containers, cargo containers. How did we get here?

MARKEY: Well, we got here because the Republicans have been nickel and diming homeland security. So, last year I made the amendment that said that all cargo coming in, in ships overseas would have to be inspected, 100 percent of the cargo coming in.

Every Republican on the homeland security committee voted against my amendment, knowing that 95 percent of the cargo that comes to America isn't inspected at all. In fact, there's an easy pass which is given to those shippers to just put the cargo onto the ship.

They know it's hitting the American ports and it's not going to get -- but the Bush administration has said 'in industry we trust.' They don't want to spend the money, but the consequences for American security is grave.

DOBBS: You said Republicans. There were some exceptions on the committee, correct? Republican exceptions.

MARKEY: Not on this amendment. On my amendment that would require all of cargo being put on ships, every Republican voted no on that amendment.

16. But I thought that COSCO deal eventually went through?

The Chinese government owns part of a company that operates a terminal at the Port of Long Beach.

That company, Cosco Container Lines, a division of China Cosco, caused a stir similar to the current one back in 1998.

Cosco ships had been calling on the Port of Long Beach for many years, using a public terminal. In the late 1990s, it wanted to build its own terminal at the former Long Beach Naval Station, says Howard Finkel, a senior vice president with Cosco.

The deal raised national-security concerns and Congress passed a bill that effectively scuttled it.

A few years later, other tenants at the port vacated space and Cosco was able to build its own terminal, says Art Wong, public information office for the Port of Long Beach.

That terminal is operated by a joint venture between Cosco and a U.S. company, Stevedoring Services of America. "Cosco is the majority lease holder with 51 percent, says Wong.

13. the problem with the deal was/is that
there was no safe guards that other companies had to go by to get their contracts. why did they allow a contract with no safe guards? why are they so willing to sell our security to a country with ties to terrorism?

i have no doubt that this company could do an excellent job of running our ports and would have signed a deal that would provide the safeguards that we demand...once again follow the money

14. Dunno, but I'd be just devastated if a media riff emerged
along the lines of "this is jeopardizing Hillary's presidential run!"

because I'd be fine with it being jeopardized, if only to get the media to STFU about it for, oh, a year or two.
