People conspire. It's just that we don't get to know for sure until after someone spills the beans.

Conspiracies are like ghosts or UFOs. There's something to all of them, but nothing very exciting. The buzz is in the mystery.

... and think about what's been in the news lately. What's dominated here in that regard? The government's been exhibiting excessive secrecy about spying on US citizens and lying and spinning about it--once again.

People of all stripes want to see patterns in things--it's part of how our brains are wired. Some people see connections where none exist. The upsurge is likely due to yet more evidence that the government has not been truthful with the public. That encourages speculation, of both the rational and irrational varieties.
