Abramoff, U.S. Attorney Acosta, and the Stolen Election
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 02:57 AM by pat_k
Earlier today (link):
"He will face the consequences of his actions," said U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta after the plea hearing. "Frauds like that committed here are not victimless. They affect real people and impact the integrity of our financial institutions." "Abramoff's deceptions on such a large scale have and will continue to have significant consequences."

Regardless of what came out of his mouth, I can only think of one reason they would trot out Acosta -- to signal Abramoff's co-conspirators in Congress and elsewhere that the fix is in; damage to them will be minimized.

You may not be familiar with the name, but R. Alexander Acosta is someone worth investigating. See R. Alexander Acosta's Role in Stealing the 2004 Election. When you look at his actions as Assistant Atty Gen Civil Rights Division, a pattern emerges: Throughout the months leading up to the election, his actions either thwarted efforts to ensure a free and fair election, or advanced efforts to take the election out of the hands of the people. He proved himself to be someone the Bush syndicate can rely on to do their dirty work.

The connections that Ney and Acosta have to the stolen election stink. And the connections between Ney and Abramoff put Abramoff and his money right in the center of the theft. The Abramoff scandal involves people in positions of power who have no regard for We the People or the consent of the governed. Given their contempt for our constitutional democracy, it should be no surprise that many of these people are tied to our stolen elections.

-------------- What Can We Do? --------------

We can't trust Acosta's oversight of the Abramoff case in Florida.

We can't trust Alice Fisher. The career attorneys (Lawrence LaVecchio and Paul Schwarz in Florida; Mary K. Bulter in DC) may be fine, but the Bush appointees over them have the power to undermine their efforts.

With Susan Schmidt on the case for the Washington Post, we can expect a steady stream of misdirection and propaganda. (As one blogger put it, Schmidt is like "Mikey" of Life Cereal fame "for her willingness to consume Republican tales without critical reflection.")

The only way we may be able to break through the fog and get justice from the Bush justice department is to demand a special prosecutor with the same plenary powers Comey gave to Fitzgerald.

Even if our calls for a special prosecutor fell on deaf ears, the effort would provide a platform for our objections to the Bush appointees.

In any event, we cannot rely on the Justice Department to go after members of congress or the administration, therefore, we must also seek justice from Congress itself; we must seek justice in the court of public opinion.

Cunningham, Harris (election thieves turn up over and over), and other members conspired to force through funding for projects the defense department didn't want and didn't need. This was an outright theft of our tax dollars to enrich MZM executives.

The Abramoff scandal puts the spotlight on Congress. We can use that spotlight to expose other conspiracies to steal our tax dollar for bogus programs no one wants. If you agree, tell your representatives (Senate and House, Republican or Democrat) that you expect them to do everyting in their power to open a comprehensive investigation, one that is not limited to the members of Congress that Abramoff directed money to.

6. Yes, we definitely need a Special Prosecutor at this point
and at the least, these prosecutor with strong ties to the people being investigated should recuse themselves from these cases.

7. absolutely she should recuse herself
she's also NEVER prosecuted a case before.

We need to find out if we can demand a new attorney be appointed. Blogger-sphere needs to pressure the Corporate media once again to report the truth vs the facts they are leaving out.

No general Joe knows she was Chertoff's lap dog!

14. K&R. Senator Reid should do a continuous "Rule 21" and close the ...
... the Senate indefinitely until all the issues associated with Abramoff are brought under special investigator plenary perview, as you suggest.

Peace.

15. Since Ohio's "Noe" is connected closely now to Abramoff...and all of
Noe's laundered coin money contributed to Repug campaigns, NOE is also heavily implicated in EF. And remember those were Workers'Comp funds by the billions that Noe STOLE to invest in those rare coins. Why are not more average working Americans outraged at that as well? Those funds are SPECIFICALLY slated for injured workers, NOT Repug campaign funds.

19. You've hit the nail on the head! All the focus on the contributions (wheth
... whether legal or illegal) takes the focus off the REAL crimes. The theft of our tax dollars. The raids on the saftey nets We the People have put in place for every worker.

My post on the subject yesterday:

16. Their tactics never change.... (and P.S. more Ney fingerprints)
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 02:55 PM by pat_k
Their tactics never change: Force through anything that helps fascist interests with all possible speed. Crush anything damaging to fascist interests. If it can't be crushed, stonewall... and stonewall some more.

These tactics work for them, and will keep working until we start anticipating and countering. Even Fitzgerald has fallen victim. Libby's lies -- as transparent as they were -- kept them all safe through the 2004 elections. Whatever Rove garden paths Rove’s has been leading Fitzgerald up, we can bet his only goal is to delay the inevitable for as long as possible.

Unless we keep the pressure on at every level open to us, they will successfully stonewall or crush any serious effort to expose Abramoff's co-conspirators in Congress and the administration.

Throughout 2004, the fascist power structure (with Acosta serving a critical role at Justice) employed these tactics with great success. Acosta is once again in pivotal position. You might be tempted to claim that "standard operating procedure" would preclude him from undermining the efforts of the lead prosecutors down there, but he has already proven his willingness to ignore and overrule career staff, in violation of all precedent.

-----------------------
P.S. Of course, their efforts to steal our vote predate 2004. The successful theft of 2000 emboldened them, and they've been getting and bolder with each passing year. In Congress, Ney has been playing a key role throughout. Conyers has been out there anticipating and countering. We need to train others to do the same both inside and outside Congress.

August 2002:
Conyers to Ney
Ney to Conyers

September 10, 2002 -- Florida Redux
http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/elecreformfloridareduxpr91002.pdf
...Today’s reports of Florida precincts that opened 4 hours late and in some cases forced up to 500 people to leave without voting stand as disturbing evidence that our election system remains in a perilous state. Nearly two years after the debacle of the Florida Presidential election, we are once again witnessing the possible disenfranchisement of thousands of Florida voters. And nearly two years after the Florida debacle there is still no federal election reform.

Republicans are blocking this bill. We need it now or the blame for future Floridas will be theirs."

21. I'm not so willing to assume a
blanket belief that all investigations will be subverted. Granted, I would obviously prefer a democrat with a long history of successfully prosecuting republicans. But scandals of this magnitude have dozens, maybe hundreds of sub levels and potential whistleblowers of coverup that there is no sane logic for them not to do their job and prosecute to the max.

If they try to put saran wrap around this or sugar coat it, it will have immediate headlines of fuzzy justice being exposed by somebody. It would be the biggest mistake they could make.

I think when this is all said and done and the indictments are added up, we're going to be very happy.

25. good time for a re-post
Maybe I'm too skeptical. Maybe I have every right to be, based on what has transpired over the past five years.

I believe that we on the left should really conduct a reality check and manage our expectations about what the impact of this scandal will be. Notice I say "impact". At its core, the activities of Jack Abramoff and his criminal co-conspirators, including many "elected" republicans, is another in a long list of scandals that define what the republican party really is - a front organization for a vast array of criminal enterprises designed to steal money from the US treasury and to bring us closer to a fascist/corporatist state - period. But is this any more serious than a fraudulent war? Is this more serious than domestic spying? Is this more serious than widespread torture? the CIA Gulag? GITMO? Stolen elections? the destruction of the free press? the war on science? Plamegate?

It is critically important for all to remember that only when the truth can no longer be covered up with the lies does this corrupt government come out with just enough to make us all drool in anticipation. But all they will give you is what you already have. They provide you with the illusion of governance. They do this with political ends in mind. There is no way in hell that this Justice Department is going to investigate anything more than what has already been leaked. What you are seeing now is damage control. Nothing more. So before we start our celebrating and dancing in the streets lets take a moment to reflect on reality. There will be no congressional shift in power in 2006. There will be no fair elections. Karl Rove will not be indicted. There will no free press to facilitate an honest debate. Chucklenuts will be sitting in the White House AT LEAST until 2008
