Bush Meets With Former Secretaries on Iraq
By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 39 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush is pressing ahead with a public relations offensive on Iraq, bringing a bipartisan group of former secretaries of defense and state to the White House for give-and-take on the unpopular military mission.

***

The hope was that the prominent figures would be persuaded by the Bush administration's argument that it has "a clear plan in place for victory in Iraq" and spread the word, said White House press secretary Scott McClellan.

***

Among those on the White House's confirmed list of attendees for Thursday were several former Clinton administration officials: Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Defense Secretaries William Cohen and William Perry. Perry helped develop Sen. John Kerry's foreign policy positions during the Massachusetts Democrat's campaign against Bush last year.

The others from previous Democratic administrations were Harold Brown, defense secretary under former President Carter, and Robert McNamara, the Vietnam-era Pentagon chief under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson.

Those from Republican administrations who are to attend are Colin Powell, Rice's predecessor under Bush; former Secretaries of State James A. Baker III, Lawrence Eagleburger, Alexander Haig and George Shultz; and former Defense Secretaries Frank Carlucci, James Schlesinger and Melvin Laird.

4. It's the new PR campaign
Remember they have been telling us for months that they are going to "re-launch" the president in January in the SOTU. This is the lead-up. Remember, you don't introduce new products in August.

5. It's all PR to this administration
"public relations offensive on Iraq" - and that's all it will ever be. For the WH to look as if it is walking across the aisle.

12. BULLSHIT!
Everyone who is attending is already on board and many of them are profiting handsomely because of his miserable Iraq policies.

Everybody there ALREADY agrees with him.

Warren Christopher is the only former Sec. of State or Defense who has publicly disagreed with * on Iraq... AND HE's NOT THERE!

21. I thought McNamara did too ?
Maybe I remembering wrong. Didn't he come out with a book or something a year or so ago about his regrets about Vietnam, and at the time he spoke about Iraq?

13. I doubt that Shrub will ask for their advice.
He will end up doing all of the talking and then tell us that they all agreed with him. It would be great if at least one of the secretaries had the backbone to speak up.

19. They ALREADY agree with him!
Albright has made a ton of money off Iraq through the Albright Group & the Iraq Debt Consolidation Consortium. William Cohen's strongest statement on Iraq was that we should have more of an international presence. William Perry said in '02 that Iraq had WMD and that they'd either have to let weapons inspectors do their work or an invasion would be inevitable. And THOSE are the Democrats.

Of all former secretaries of state and defense, only Warren Christopher has said that we should not have invaded Iraq. Guess what? He's not there today and was probably not invited.

Everybody in attendance is already on board the Trippy Train.

15. Don't tell Bush is suddenly getting worried about what
history will say about him. It's more likely this gimmick is a Condoleeza Rice idea intended build up her image. Rice among the greats of American history. What a joke.

18. I honestly thought this was going to be a joke
Bush talking to people who don't agree with him? There was no way it could be true! In all seriousness, isn't this the first time since the first few months of the administration that this has happened?

They're probably being briefed by Condi beforehand: "Don't upset him."
