Chertoff's Ch. of Staff's wife gets plum recess appointment in Immigration
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 12:19 PM by Horse with no Name
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/04/AR2006010401953.html

President Bush yesterday made a raft of controversial recess appointments, including Julie L. Myers to head the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau at the Department of Homeland Security, in a maneuver circumventing the need for approval by the Senate.

Myers, a niece of former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Richard B. Myers and the wife of the chief of staff to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, had been criticized by Republicans and Democrats who charged that she lacked experience in immigration matters.

Myers's nomination faced a bruising and potentially embarrassing fight on the Senate floor, where Democrats were prepared to argue that politics, not merit, drove her selection for an important job preventing terrorists and weapons from entering the country.

Edited for misread. Thank you.

11. No--she is not C's wife.
I saw the wedding announcement in the NYT and it is truly his Chief of Staff that Myers is married to.

conveniently use different last names? Why is she not Julie L. Wood? I know that lots of professional women do keep their maiden names, but boy is it ever convenient when it comes to handing out patronage jobs to family members of the well-placed..

7. Not Chertoff's wife
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 12:17 PM by peaches2003
Not that it matters because the appt. is still outrageous, but Julie Myers is not Chertoff's wife. She is Chertoff's Chief of Staff's wife (as stated in the WaPo article).

EDIT: Sorry. Posted before seeing that this had already been pointed out in another post.

9. Job experience smearience....
she'll get on the job training and will learn from many mistakes. Like Mike Brown of FEMA, she can then show others how not to run I.C.E.

14. It's their "in your face" way of saying....
f**k you. Cronyism costs the lives of innocent people in NO. Who will ever forget the clip of shitforbrains proclaiming "You're doing a heck of a job, brownie". I don't think we can endure another 3 years of these asshats, not to mention alito sitting on the bench. It's gonna take years to undo all the damage they've done.
