District 3

2002 Congressional Districts
District Population African Amer. Hispanic Total Minority Gore % Bush % Nader %
1 668,360 16.6% 1.6% 19.8% 49.6% 47.9% 1.4%
2 668,176 19.4% 2.4% 24.3% 47.8% 49.3% 1.5%
3 668,479 2.0% 6.3% 12.7% 37.2% 59.5% 1.8%
4 668,385 24.3% 2.7% 28.9% 49.1% 48.3% 1.2%
Statewide Total 2,673,400 15.6% 3.2% 21.4% 45.9% 51.3% 1.5%

We also have the only R for Congress in the state!

You wonder why? This is the home of Wal-Mart. We also border OK, MO, and are very near the corner of Kansas. The University of Arkansas is also in the area and helps, but apparently not much.

Just realized, notice the 2% African Amer. population compared to 16-24%. This is also the home of Harrison where the KKK started.

1. Well, I'm in district 4 and our rep. is no better than a rethug....
Mike Ross... always votes with the rethugs and proudly proclaims himself as a "conservative democrat". He just makes me :puke:

12. He's my congressman, too
And I've always said he was a Republican. He insists he a Dem, and is always very nice and polite, but he still irritates me with his voting record.

I asked him not long ago if he wasn't angry that he was lied to in the run up to the war in Iraq, and he said wouldn't even admit the lies happened - "bad intelligence." Sheesssshhhh.

Blanche isn't much better, nor is Mark

2. Look at the low minority percentage in 1 vs 2,3,4
Forget converting 1, get 2,3,4 to vote Dem a bit harder.

4. The history of the Third District is conservative
the former Congressman, John Paul Hammerschmidt, was still telling folks Nixon was innocent even as he flew back to CA in disgrace after resigning. Bill Clinton ran against him and was defeated, remember.

The Third District is changing, however; there has been a big influx of Hispanics, especially in Carroll County (Berryville and Green Forest).
In the last couple of years I've seen African Americans in Harrison.

The KKK group is actually in Zinc, not Harrison proper, btw; last year, the group sent out a mass mailing talking out against blacks and gays. The City Council of Harrison passed a resolution condemning the letter and assuring folks that racism would not be tolerated. Fed Ex Freight has a major headquarters here, and I think their tolerance policy has had an effect on the business community here.

FYI, there will be a meeting of Citizens for Political Reform/Newton County Friends for Peace at 2pm on Sunday, Jan. 15. The illegal wiretaps will be discussed, as well as plans for political action. We are affiliated with United for Peace and Justice. Anyone interested in more information, please mail me.

6. I agree that district 3 is heavily influenced by WM's Home Office in
Bentonville. I've only been in Arkansas for 14 years and have watched Bentonville, which had only a single traffic light, grow in to the high rent district. There was an article in the local paper not long ago about how the influx of all the 'vendors' of WM had caused both Bentonville and Rogers to cater to rizzy, expensive shops where people with money to burn could have their dogs pampered or their faces lifted. It's certainly GOP heaven up there.

8. Not everyone does, though
There is no WalMart in Newton County, one of the counties in the Third District. Some people started a petition to try and get one, but there weren't many signatures. The environmentalists/progressives made sure the local store owners know a bit about WalMart, and got some to listen, which is a minor miracle.

People are also a bit miffed about the WalMart airport, which is out in the middle of nowhere yet superceded the viable airport in Fayetteville. Around here, WalMart is sometimes considered the 300 lb gorilla throwing its weight around.

That being said, it will come as no surprise that our conman, John Boozman, gets money from WalMart foundations and PACs-in fact, WalMart is his number one contributor.

10. Maybe because the poor working guy wanting to buy an used car
(In 2002 Arkansas had a per capita personal income of $23,556. This per capita personal income ranked 50th in the United States and was 76 percent of the national average) has to pay 6% sales tax, but Wal-Mart (with about $9 billion in after-tax profits in 2003) was allowed to buy a fleet of private jets and pay zero in sales taxes.
