Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma Releases Statement Regarding Lonnie Latham
1/4/2006 2:26:04 PM

“The Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma is deeply grieved having heard the recent news regarding Lonnie Latham. Our first concern is for his church and family. As Christians we reach out to those who hurt; however, we fully support law enforcement in dealing with these matters. While we certainly do not condone this type of activity we do continue to care and pray for Lonnie during this difficult time,” said Heidi B. Wilburn, spokeswoman for the BGCO.

I just spoke to Kenyn Cureton, Convention Relations spokesman at the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville a few minutes ago to determine this hypocrite's status as a member of the powerful Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention.

He told me that as a rule, if the charges are a statement of fact involving a "public moral failure", that the minister usually "gracefully resigns" from their position of authority on the Executive Committee.

So far, Rev. Latham (who helped forge the notion and motion within the SBC that gays and lesbians can become heterosexual after "accepting Christ") is yet to resign his position from the EC.

On evidence alone, it would seem unlikely that Rev. Latham was conducting a "police ministry" (as he claims)in Oklahoma City, given that the good reverend lives in Tulsa. And he was arrested in the parking lot of the Habana Inn, which just happens to be one of the most popular gay resorts in the whole southwest. (do a google on Habana Inn, Oklahoma City and see what happens.)

Good riddance you hateful, lying, hypocrite.

1. The Habana Inn
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 02:58 PM by Behind the Aegis
Three types of people go there: the lost tourist (always a pip to watch), the partier (there are five bars within walking distance), and the horny!

6. Had this arrest occurred on the steps of a church one might wonder...
but in the parking lot of a gay resort makes one NOT wonder. I just called his church in Tulsa and graciously pointed out to them -- lest it escape their diligent eye -- that Habana Inn is a gay resort.

9. Cruising
After the sun goes down, so do the hotel dwellers.

The bars are fun, and the store has some interesting items, but if you go to the back of the hotel or near the pool it is "Cruise City!" It is fun to sit in the restaurant and watch the 'theatre of the living.' :)

when the good reverend drove his new Mercedes into Habana Inn's parking lot.}(

18. Like fish in a barrel!
As funny as this is, there is a real problem. I am curious as to the charge. If he was just looking for a 'quiche' (wink, wink), then that shouldn't be illegal, any more than it is to proposition someone at a bar. Now, if he was offering to pay...well, that is prostitution, which is illegal (but shouldn't be).

make an offer of oral sex in an open public space in the particular venue that this occurred in. That seems to be what the cops were saying on the video.

he looks pretty gushed to me. Not to mention the messed up hair. He looks like he just got out of bed. Though it seems he was headed TO bed.:sarcasm:

12. It looks like a very nice place...
and I realize that the name "Gushers" refers to the oil industry... but.... I dunno... if I owned a gay resort, maybe I wouldn't call the restaurant "Gushers." Maybe it's just me, but that calls to mind... something else.

Maybe that's why they needed the new paint & carpet?

I'M SORRY. I just said a minute ago that I wouldn't go there.

And I am originally from Oklahoma... but only in the Sooner state would a proprietor brag about the new paint & carpet on the restaurant's home page. Promote the rennovations, sure, but the way they phrase it makes it sound like "you should have seen this place before."

16. LOL!
Yes, Gushers is a double entendre. I think the bragging was because the look before was a 1970's porno set-looking deal. I kept waiting for cheezy dialogue to go along with my cheesburger.

7. It is a huge complex.
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 03:13 PM by Behind the Aegis
It is a hotel, has two bars (one is for gay cowboys), a restaurant, and a shop. As for being a resort...well, from the outside it might look like that. ;)

On edit: There are three bars...a piano bar, a dance club, and a gay country bar.

17. Sounds like the Parliament House here in Orlando
Supposed to be one of the largest gay resorts in the country; they are also going to be building the country's (and maybe the world's) first gay timeshare resort on the property. But yes, there are quite a few people who go "cruising" around the rooms there - I wonder how many of them are neocon closet cases?

Latham was simply holding auditions for the next production of "Sodom, 40666".

You have to really suck as an actor, though.

13. There is an infinitessimally small chance . . .
Something good might come out of this. Note the conciliatory language of the BGC statement, at least initially. Sometimes, in very rare circumstances, when your prejudice smacks you right in the face in the person of someone you know and love, the heart changes, and the prejudice fades away.

Far more prevalent, I know, are the cases of folks who love their prejudices more than they love their fellow human beings. Unfortunately in the climate of fear and hatred so assiduously cultivated by our nation's leaders, this is the likely outcome.

But i am a straight guy so perhaps i missed the subtle "gay theme" to the place.

I would be the first to protect the man's private life if he wasn't such a frigging bag
of hypocrisy. Making money and gaining power with an anti gay agenda all the time
driving to OK City for the manly b.j. or two.

21. How does anyone know he's a hypocrite?
Could it be maybe he's a guy tortured by the fact of his orientation and the brainwashing he has received all his life from family and society about the evils of homosexuality?

How do you know he ever preached about it?

23. He has been VERY vocal here in the Tulsa area for years condemning
those who do as he does but not as he preaches. I think the laws (ordinances, actually) that were used to snag him are horribly unconstitutional and draconian but he seems to have his own comeuppance for the hypocrisy and hatemongering he's purveyed for many years. The S. Baptists are fond of saying "we love the sinner but hate the sin"...I will extend the very same courtesy to Loonie Lonnie concerning his own beam in the eye.

25. As a member of the Executive Committee of the SBC...
he was instrumental in the new policy of allowing gays and lesbians into their church IF they accepted Christ as their savior which according to his theology would automatically change their orientation to a heterosexual one.

So he has not only preached against a natural gay orientation, but affected doctrine and policies within the Southern Baptist Church on this. Thus, he is a hypocrite. Because he was obviously no stranger to the Habana Inn or similar places.

31. Still seems to me this is essentially criticizing him for being homosexual
I mean, society still shits on homosexuals, it still takes courage to come out, I am sure, and in those traditional values areas, where someone is bambarded through family and community with the message that what you are is evil and despicable, it just doesn't seem right to attack him for hypocracy and make jokes about "ram-rod." By that logic, any closeted homosexual is a hypocrite.

28. Of course let's remember

Yes, the story here is this guy being a total hypocrite.

But let's remember he is being arrested for asking another adult to engage in a consensual sexual act! As long as no money was involved, WTF!?!?!? They didn't say he asked to receive it there on the street corner. It is against the law in Oklahoma to ask someone to engage in sexual acts with you?

Are laws against oral sex still enforced in Oklahoma?

Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 04:41 PM by RGBolen

They said it was because he asked for it in a public place but it would have been legal to have had it should the undercover cop decided "what the hell, let's do it"????

So if I ask my fiancee in the food court of a mall in Oklahoma for oral sex I have committed a crime of lewdness?
