Poll question: How likely do you see it that Bush et al will be imprisoned for war crimes |
|
I don't know if anyone recalls the strutting of Milosevic of Serbia during his reign of power. I recall the frustration of thinking that nothing could or would be done to address his crimes against humanity.
On some level Milosevic pales in comparison to the current US administration, if only because the United States was once a great nation and is still an important player in the world, albeit a greatly weakened one.
Recently we have begun to see defections from the Repuke Politburo in the Senate, House and among the punditry, as noted in the cover article at DU, by Bernard Weiner.
I note that history is replete with characters who thought themselves invincible, and thus overplayed their hands, most notably Hitler in May of 1940, and Napoleon in the first decade of the 19th century, but also many less notable figures, like Nicolae Ceauşescu and Leopoldo Galtieri. Even Pinochet has been subject to arrest.
On the other hand, history also records those who escaped justice, like Stalin, although it is sometimes said that Stalin was smothered by his immediate subordinates after suffering a stroke.
Although my hope has often waned in this spiraling decent of our country into an unprecedented abyss, I do note that the weakened United States exists at the whim of those who finance it, largely powers that are foreign to the United States - and have no vested interest in its survival or its thriving, for instance the Chinese government as well as European interests. It does seem that we are so weakened now, that it would be relatively easy for an external power to impose its will on the United States. Obviously this leaves the potential for the arrest and trial of the seemingly invincible leaders.
Or am I just dreaming?
Please rate your feeling of the probability of the arrest, trial, and imprisonment of the members of the Bush cabal.

2. They haven't done anything so far |

despite all of the travesties of justice he has committed over the past five years. Why would they bother to do anything in the next three?

5. Maybe because they have had enough as well. |

It is different if someone who owes you nothing and offends you than if someone who owes you money offends you.
If Bush is remarkable for anything, it is his capacity to turn good will into bad will.

9. But Vietnam didn't so completely destroy the United States. |
|
When Kissinger left office, the United States was still the world's richest nation. Now it is the world's largest debtor, theoretically the world's poorest nation.
I note that without Ford's pardon, Nixon risked criminal trial.

14. Not yet anyway. There is no end in sight for this war. |
|
It may yet prove incredibly expensive, especially if the Iranians push the United States into the Gulf.
I think the US Army is very much weakened by misadministration.

for some...Cheney, Rummy, probably won't live long enough...I think as Americans, with not such a long history, time is more often our enemy than our friend. I'm often amazed at how much I've learned since bush was selected. I really don't want to learn any more.

of him being imprisoned for war crimes.
He'll lead a nice happy and comfortable retirement. And considering the way Dems have capitulated on so many things, I expect him to serve his full term.

christ, how long has THAT trial been on?
i have no hope, i probably shouldn't even post because i feel irresponsible posting when i have nothing to contribute but my negativity
certainly i support arrest and full public trial of bush and all others who ordered the invasion of iraq, i further support arrest and full public trial of bush for making appointments based on patronage (how much did drownie brownie kick back to get that job?) instead of competence
there are too many unanswered questions for me, i believe high offices have been for sale, for they have been filled with incompetents
but u.s. grant never went on trial, * won't either

Ask yourself how many days Hitler, Stalin, Kim Il Sung, or Mao Zedong spent in jail.

17. Hitler committed suicide. Stalin may have been smothered while |
|
lying in a pool of his own pee. (cf Radzhinsky, Stalin). It may not have been much for the magnitude of his crimes, of course, but at least there was some retribution.
Himmler killed himself, as did Goring (shortly before scheduled execution). Goring was tried, and the fat sadist did think once that he was invincible and frankly, up until 1941 at least, he had a case.
Mao and Kim got away with it.
Some major criminals do get away with it, but many don't.
Those who over play their hands, get away with the least. The Bushies are way overplaying their hands.
I am not sure what the odds of trial and arrest are, but they certainly are not zero. The probability is getting higher by the day.
