Va. Man Charged With Killing Missionary

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) -- A man was charged with killing a Mormon missionary and wounding another in a shooting that police believe occurred because the victims had witnessed a crime while they were discussing their religion door-to-door.

James Rickey Boughton Jr., 19, was arrested Wednesday at his Chesapeake home and was being held without bond, police said. He is charged with first-degree murder, and malicious wounding, among other counts.

The missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were shot Monday, and Morgan Winslow Young, 21, of Bountiful, Utah, died Monday evening. Police have not discussed why they believe the victims witnessed an earlier crime.

15. Michelle Malkin thanks you from the bottom of her...
um, whatever she has connected to her aorta in place of a heart.

You just know this is going right in her next "Oh, DU is so evil, so why do I spend so much time there?" column. Or maybe Neal Boortz will glom onto it. Either way it makes us look like lefty FReepers.

4. Yes, I saw this. Scum is too kind.
They didn't have W's advantages, but that's no excuse for murder. Don't buy the Mormons' Moroni angel thing, or their worship of Republicans, no matter what, but this person did not deserve this. Nor did his family and friends.

6. Of course, if they weren't out
trying to "convert" people, they would still be alive.

That may sound harsh, but I am rally tired of these arrogant assholes who think they are "God's instruments" of my salvation.

Jesus didn't go door-to-door annoying people. He went out in public, preached to whoever would listen and left everyone else alone.

have a right to "go door-to-door". No one has a "right" to pester me. Especially religous cultists.

11. Of course
and if they hadn't been walking down that street, they wouldn't have been mugged
and if he hadn't stopped to help that stranger, he wouldn't have been carjacked
and if she hadn't been wearing that blouse, she wouldn't have been raped
and . . .

19. Nope, they were just walking down the street
they were coming into places they were not invited, bothering people that didn't want to be bothered. Comparing this raping a woman is specious.

No one "deserves" to be shot. But no one has the right to force their religion on me.

12. If someone gets shot while canvassing for the Democratic Party,
will you take the same attitude? After all, we also go door-to-door trying to bring people around to our way of thinking. Should that be a capital crime?

20. I dislike soliciting of ANY sort
Should it be a capital crime? No, just illegal. No one should be allowed to come on to my property and disturb me who is not:

1) Invited.
2) On official business.
3) Trick or treating

If you wish to "solicit" me, then I will accept you leaving a brochure on my doorstep. Do not inflict your beastly society upon me.

When did privacy fall into such disrepute?

8. Knocking on a door as a death sentence
I never understand how people who consider themselves progressive are just as selective in their compassion as the most extreme right wing. The only difference is the people who are marginalized or hated.

22. I feel very sorry that these people have been harmed
no one should die this way. No one should be shot.

I am simply stating the facts of the situation. The difference between me and a RW thug is that I do NOT advocate violence, will assist a person in distress, no matter how they got there (even RW thugs) and I don't "marginalize" anyone. I am not out pestering my lawmakers to make shooting religous loonies legal.

Wait a minute, let me correct that.

I WOULD support legalized hunting of spammers with no limit on the number you can shoot.

(That's a joke, but some times...)

24. A fair number of the replies here are not about the article at all.
I noticed this a bit- then a bit more as more replies came in. I find it puzzling. People are making this out to be "guy shoots Mormons who come a-knocking". But really this is "guy shoots strangers who come a-knocking because he believes they witnessed a crime he comitted". I think this guy was an equal-opportunity killer who wasn't terribly interested in the fact they were Mormons.

By the way those who believed that my comment about Mormon underwear stopping bullets was a coded salute to fascism, please continue raising a balled fist to your mouth to stifle a shriek of horror. Barring that, shriek. Shriek and run into the night...

26. Newsflash. Witnessing a crime will get you shot in several situations.
If I'm watching some Mafia guys loading a trunk full of cocaine or a dead body, I'm going to place a good bet that I'll probably get shot if I stick around.

This is just bad timing by some guys who knocked on the wrong door.

Perhaps they shouldn't be knocking on doors if they don't want to witness crimes behind closed doors.

I feel bad that they died, but it the world of criminal affairs, this makes sense.

28. Oh god, another person who acturally read the article!
I don't get why there are scads of messages trying to work this into something other than what it apparently was: "This is just bad timing by some guys who knocked on the wrong door." Indeed.

29. According to the police department today....
According to the Chesapeake police department today, the two were walking down the street and the survivor said they never saw the other crime happen. Boughton had just mugged a man who was getting out of his car. He shot at the man, but missed. The man hit the ground and played dead. Boughton saw the two missionaries walking down the street about 100 ft away, ran after them, and shot them from the back. They never knocked on Boughton's door.
