Poll question: Two Garages. One has a smoker, one has a running car....
You have to go spend three hours in one.

Which do you choose?

This thought was brought about by the indoor truck, MX and other motorized events being held in enclosed buildings all over America. I have never heard any outrage about these.

Smoking? I have read on this board of people complaining of people smoking in a passing car.

1. smoking = smokescreen!
many toxic exposures that are forced upon us are off the radar screen because smoking is being blamed for everything, or rather the only toxic exposures discussed are those that have to do with smoking and tobacco.

It is a "pile on" that is encouraged by other polluting industries. Clean Air Initiative?? of course that means more mercury!! But go after those smokers.

2. You win one kewpie doll!
It's the same as "anti Christmas" or "pro abortion." An easy knee jerk topic that ourr congress critters can stand behind.

5. Plus TAXES TAXES TAXES
I'm glad fewer people are smoking, it is a horrible addiction. But it is also a huge smokescreen to the rest of the toxins we are exposed to. And the tax bonanza didn't hurt either. Villify and tax, now that's bipartisan!

9. You know, I've never thought of it that way.
I've always known the smoking ban people were much more interested in moralizing than they were in actual environmental health -- I mean, it blows my mind that they never seem to get behind a universal indoor air quality approach -- it always has to be smoking, not general air quality. I've never considered the possibility that there might be a campaign, however small or slipshod, to stoke these initiatives to stir up controversy and thus bring progress on real worker safety to a halt. And that's even after a friend of mine who works in worker safety came home griping that the only thing his organization could get contracts for at the time was anti-smoking activities, and they were working them just to stay afloat even though they know smoking is way, way, WAYYYY down on the list of dangers for workers.

I'm not sure I'm paranoid enough to believe it outright, but I think I'll be keeping the possibility of outside agitation in mind from now on.

4. I love you too, dear.
I'm sure you will do your best to make it so.

Have a pleasant evening and please go insult someone else.
