Bush Administration Cut Mine Safety Funding as Early as 2002
Edited on Thu Jan-05-06 08:15 PM by louis c
After appearing in Pennsylvania for a photo-op in August of 2002, this article was printed. You'll get the picture.

<snip>

That spirit, though, was not present this year (2002) when the Bush administration proposed cutting the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) by 7 million dollars. The administration defended the 6-percent reduction by noting the number of coal mines has been decreasing. Yet coal mining fatalities have gone up three years in a row. In March (2002), Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-West Virginia) maintained the funding cut would cause a 25% reduction in the government's mine-safety workforce.

1. ABC Evening news had a scathing report about Bush and mine safety
ABC had a surprisingly hard hitting report tonight including interview with a government inspector who claimed that his hands were tied and enforcement of safety rules was not being done.

2. When the task gets lost, people get hurt.
An axiom in social services. The job of government is to take care of people. The * cabal won't restore any cut funding unless someone dies on national tv and then it's with a song and a dance and some slight of hand towards their patrons.
