Afghan suicide bomber kills 10 during US envoy's visit

A suicide bomber killed at least 10 people and wounded 50 in an attack in southern Afghanistan yesterday during a visit by the United States ambassador.

Ronald Neumann, the envoy, was meeting officials in Tirin Khot, the capital of Uruzgan province, when a bomb exploded a mile from the building. He was unhurt.

Suicide bombings were uncommon in Afghanistan until recently but in the past three months there have been more than a dozen. Two lieutenants of al-Qa'eda's commander in Iraq, Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, are reported to have entered Afghanistan in recent months.

Rebel violence has killed more than 1,200 people, including more than 50 US soldiers, in the past year. The period has been the bloodiest for US forces since they invaded in 2001 and toppled the Taliban regime.
