Mines wants to raise the legal age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products from 18 to 19 under his bill (LB782), and has some precedent with which to make his case. In three states — Alabama, Alaska and Utah — 19 is the legal age, and New Jersey lawmakers are considering the same.

“Smoking is a poor choice, but if you’re 18 and can fight for your country, you can make choices about your body and what you choose to do with it,” said Kelly Etzold, owner of the Tobacco Hut. “(Legal age) doesn’t affect anything now — it doesn’t have anything to do with the legal age, it has to do with addiction.”

In Nebraska, employers don’t have to tell employees why they’re giving them the boot. That would change under a bill introduced by Sen. Jeanne Combs of Milligan, at least for public employees.

Her bill (LB843) proposes that no public employee be terminated “until such employee has been given the specific reason for the proposed termination and the employee is provided a meaningful opportunity to present the employee’s position. …” If passed, the bill could have a big impact in Lincoln, a government-heavy town.
