Poll question: Poll on the draft
Hearing all this talk about a war on Iran should make us think about the possibility of a draft once again. The issue has kind of languished on DU for the last year. Do you still think there will be a draft? If so, when?

1. Houston should take Reggie Bush
They have David Carr at QB and don't need Leinart or Vince Young. You can never have too many good RB's, just look at KC this year with Holmes and Johnson.

2. If it happens
I think if it happens it will be 2007. If the dems win back House & Senate, I don't think it will happen. The republicans will not reinstate a draft just before the 06 elections, unless they really just want to hand control back to the dems. But if the dems don't win majority back in 06... no need to finish that thought.

5. If They Start Up the Draft Before the Elections...
...that means they have decided not to hold any more elections.

3. If you know any young people worried about a draft...
I heard that doing the following can help if they are ever put in a position to claim that they are conscientious objectors.

1. Have photo taken of said young person holding paper with the words "Conscientious Objector" plainly written upon it.

2. Mail photo to them in a sealed envelope (the fedex kind would be ideal) by CERTIFIED MAIL.

3. Do not open.

Should a draft be instated, the photo will offer proof that this young person objected to the war BEFORE the fact. The photo is sealed and dated.

If military service is desired in the future, and no draft takes place, said young person can simply dispose of the envelope.

Has anyone else heard of any other ideas? My daughter's boyfriend turns 18 in February, and the thought of a draft concerns him.

4. We sent ourselves metered mail of artwork and letters my....
then nine-year-old son wrote about his experience attending an anti-war rally in San Francisco. I don't know what will come of it but I took comfort in doing so. Heck, I don't know if my son is even a conscientious objector, but I'm damn certain he does not like the war Bush* started in Iraq. He also has over fifty people that will attest to his views about this war because he publicly stood up and spoke his mind at a Cindy Sheehan vigil in Winters, California. I was totally blown away, and quite proud of my son because he wasn't prompted in any way to speak, but felt he needed to (secretly I think he's going to be one of our future leaders).

10. Wow - you must be so proud!
The future looks all the brighter because of parents like you, and brave young people like your son. Thanks for sharing that!

7. Thanks for the information
This is very useful stuff; I shared my thoughts on the draft with my fellow peers at the university and was pretty much scoffed at and labeled as fantasy. I'm not saying that the draft is coming back tomorrow but if Bush Inc is intent on going into Iran and Syria, I know for a fact that our current military, as it is, will not be up to the task.

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
