A Detour in The Corridor Of Power
Indictment Snaps Rapid Rise of Republican Star

By Thomas B. Edsall
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, November 16, 2005; A17

...

An Iranian American, Safavian was a founding member of the board of Norquist's Islamic Free Market Institute, when the Bush campaign was targeting Arab American voters in key states such as Florida and Michigan.

Norquist, who welcomed Safavian to the board of the institute in 1999, declined to answer questions about Safavian.

In 2001, Safavian began a remarkable, four-year ascent in government. He first served in 2001-02 as chief of staff to Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah). Then, in June 2002, Safavian moved to the executive branch with a plum assignment: chief of staff at the General Services Administration. GSA is the government's bread and butter agency, letting contracts for construction as well as buying goods and services.

Safavian's big break came on Nov. 4, 2003, when President Bush nominated him to become the powerful administrator of the Office of Federal Procurement Policy. The post is crucial to the information technology, contracting and services industries, whose contractors can have millions of dollars riding on every OFPP decision.

1. Deeper and deeper
I wonder if anyone will think to ask Abramoff what he may know about 9/11?

4. Especially if Atta was indeed on Abramoff's boat before 9/11
as reported in I think Bradblog and other places recently.

He could have the dirt on 9/11.

6. Personally, I think they should take a good hard look at Grover
Norquist's calendar and communications. But that's just me.

7. And then there's Chertoff's ties to a terrorist org.
In 1995, A New Jersey neurologist, Magdy Elamir (a 20 year Egyptian national resident of the U.S.) started an HMO in New Jersey which ultimately failed three years later.

In 1998, Congressman Ben Gilman was given a foreign intelligence report suggesting that money was being skimmed from the HMO and funneled to Osama bin-Laden's terrorist network.

The State of New Jersey ultimately bailed out the HMO and found that $16.7 million was illegally diverted, about $5.7 million of which is unaccounted for and diverted to offshore banks (in other words, impossible to trace).

In late 1998, Elamir retained Michael Chertoff (then in private practice) as his attorney to represent him in litigation with the State of New Jersey and HMO creditors seeking reimbursement.

Elamir's brother Mohamed was apparently up to his hips in smuggling weapons for use by terrorist networks; in fact, both Magdy and Mohamed fess up to funding at least one arms smuggler with Al Qaida connections.

Both Elamir's (also spelled 'el Amir') figured prominently in Operation Diamondback, a well-buried precursor to 9/11 that was discussed in (apparently) some depth during the congressional 9/11 investigation, but much testimony remains classified.
