An American Vietnam
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 02:27 AM by mikelewis
In 1978, the communist government in Afghanistan fell. Its demise was paid for by U.S. taxpayers at the behest of President Jimmy Carter based on a plan hatched by his National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. The idea was to force the Soviet Union into a Russian Vietnam, a never ending conflict that would serve several purposes. The first would embroil the Soviets in a ceaseless guerrilla war that would bankrupt their empire and dispirit their people. The second benefit would be that we could sink our covert hooks into an area that was at best ambivalent toward the west.

As the plan began to unfold, we found a strong ally in the Islamic fascists who longed for the dictatorial powers we offered. In the past, we had propped dictators up all over the world, supporting them with wealth, arms and training. Thus they knew we could follow through on our promises. So these “Fundamentalists” used the Islamic religion to incite religious zealotry all over the Muslim world. Together we used the sale of illegal drugs and banned weapons to offset the cost of the war so that while the Soviets went bankrupt, we never noticed the price.

Within a few years, these “Freedom Fighters” as they were called were being recruited from places as far off as Africa and Central Europe. They were known as the Mujahadeen and here in America, we glorified them in stories in our Free Press and in Hollywood movies like Rambo 3. At the time, we believed that these men were fighting for a modified version of the American Dream. The sale of illegal drugs skyrocketed as more and more money was being channeled into the fight. Countless charities were set up to covertly fund this army and covert businesses were propped up to secretly channel money to them. It was a proxy war that defined the Cold War.

After the Carter Administration collapsed under the weight of an oil crisis and then a hostage crisis, the Reagan Administration fully embraced the plan with funding and manpower. We sent arms and set up training camps to teach these recruits the art of guerrilla war. As we know, guerrilla war is not a pretty sight. We see glimpses of it in our newspapers on a daily basis. The men who fight against an invincible army must use unconventional methods. Bombing and murder, terror and intimidation swept over the Soviet Union in a tidal wave that would ultimately bring about the fall of the entire Empire. What we were either unable or unwilling to do by direct force, this army of Freedom Fighters accomplished in roughly ten year. The Soviet Empire collapsed bankrupt and exhausted.

So now we fast forward to a date we cannot mention here. A date that will live in eternal infamy and lay shrouded in complete secrecy. The only reason I mention it is because it was these same “Freedom Fighters” that once destroyed the Soviet Union who had reportedly turned on their one-time masters. Now we are the one’s staring down the wrong end of a ceaseless un-winnable war, slowly suffocating under crushing debt and populated by a dispirited people. We are now the one’s wondering if our great empire will fall under the weight of world full of terrorists and thugs whose only goal is to kill us for our ideology. We are the one's wondering if the chickens have come home to roost.

If history is any guide, we know what the outcome will be. We know that the Soviet Union, an empire whose might was as great as ours fell. How can we expect any other outcome? How can we pretend that We The People can stand in the face of an enemy whose only goal is to see the resurgence of Fascism and the enslavement of a people?

I’m not going to offer a “conspiracy theory”, though I believe I understand what we are facing and more importantly, who we are facing. It serves little purpose anyway because the path we are on has been charted by historical fact. The recipe for the destruction of a Nation is being mixed as I type this and a fascist empire is rising yet again through bombing and murder, terror and intimidation. Maybe we’ll be strong enough to resist it but so far, none have. If our arrogance leads us to believe that we can avoid the same fate as the Soviets and so many others then maybe our arrogance can save us. But if history is any guide, it’s usually arrogance mixed with ignorance that dooms the Nation.

These are the stakes we are playing for now. This is the future that has been laid before us. Either we’re going to fight Fascism here and now or our children are going to suffer at the hands of a despot. There is no other alternative that I can see. I just hope those old men who fought King George gave us the right tools to meet this nightmare and beat it back into Hell where it belongs.

God Bless America.
We sure as hell need it right now.
