Bush hits the road to trumpet new numbers??
Is there something the rest of us should know? What new numbers? Bush? Deliver a speech on the economy? What next? Cheney giving a speech on compassionate treatment of prisoners of war?

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-01-06-bush-economy_x.htm

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush and leaders of his economic team fanned out to trumpet encouraging signs in the economy but were confronted Friday with disappointing news about weaker than expected job growth.
Friday's marquee event was Bush's trip to Chicago, where the president was to appear at the Chicago Board of Trade and deliver a speech on the economy before the Chicago Economic Club.

The day was also to see Vice President Dick Cheney touring a Harley-Davidson factory and making remarks in Kansas City, Mo.; Treasury Secretary John Snow at the New York Stock Exchange; Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez in Louisville; Labor Secretary Elaine Chao in Baltimore; and Energy Secretary Sam Bodman in Pittsburgh.

Their appearances came on the heels of the government's release of its employment report for December, which showed that job growth slowed from a big hiring spurt in November. There was a gain of just 108,000 jobs in December, about half of what economists were expecting. That compared with 215,000 jobs created in November.

I hope Sabra makes it through the day
The sweep pre-visit on his building just might turn up a new enemy combatant. :scared:

Frankly, I was hoping for a huge blizzard but no such luck. The weather forecast was a little lake effect snow and overcast. *sniff*

2. Bu...bu...but you don't get it!
The fact that the economy only created 108,000 jobs means that we don't need to create more jobs (since everyone else is employed--ergo the 215,000 the month before).

7. ELEVEN SOLDIERS KILLED IN IRAQ YESTERDAY
ELEVEN is a number george and no doubt a number greeted warmly in the radical conservative klaverns which house your supporters. One can only surmise that your supporters want our Soldiers to die in Iraq; there can be no other explanation, so trumpet away.

9. Bush wants Fed rate increases stopped - so he shifted 71,000 from
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 10:08 AM by papau
Dec to Nov, making Nov job growth 305,000.

Thus he has the low 108,000 to bring to the table to discuss with New Fed Chairman at end of month.

Besides the birth/death adjustment scheduled for Jan is always large negative:

2005 Net Birth/Death Adjustment (in thousands) Supersector Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
Total
-280 100 179 257 207 184 -76 132 54 37 18 53

That pattern is unchanged, but "seasonally adjusted" rules have been changed - again.

It is hard to see the real numbers these days, as the published ones are driven by political needs.

14. Bloomberg reports on Dec 108,000 job growth
http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=a4AXVmsFWBAY&refer=news_index

U.S. Dec. Payrolls Rise 108,000; Jobless Rate Falls (Update1)

Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- <snip>The unemployment rate fell to 4.9 percent from 5 percent and labor costs rose, the Labor Department said today in Washington. The December gain followed figures showing 71,000 more jobs than first reported for November and October.

December's increase was less than economists predicted, suggesting companies may still be relying on productivity gains to meet demand and are reluctant to hire. Slower job growth may pose a further risk to consumer spending, which economists already expect to weaken this year as the housing market slows, and complicate President George W. Bush's effort to boost sagging ratings for his handling of the economy. <snip>

Average weekly hours for production workers fell by six minutes to 33.7 hours, lower than the 33.8 hours forecast by economists in the Bloomberg survey. The manufacturing workweek declined by to 40.7 hours and overtime held at 4.5 hours.

Workers' average hourly earnings increased by 5 cents to $16.34, a 0.3 percent increase from November that exceeded the median forecast of 0.2 percent. Average weekly earnings were $550.66, up 6 cents from November. The earnings data is for non- supervisory production workers. Both hourly and weekly earnings rose 3.1 percent from a year earlier. <snip>

16. If it was REALLY good news
he and his economic team wouldn't have to "fan out to trumpet encouraging signs in the economy", it would be evident. Clinton never had to "trumpet" his economy, everyone knew it was good.
