CIA Gave Iran Nuke Plans in 2004 (LA Times) : Recipe for COLD WAR II?
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 01:10 PM by McCamy Taylor
What would Karl Rove ask for if he could have anything he wanted? The return of the Cold War would be good. An enemy that never goes away, that you never actually have to fight but who is always a justification for the suspension of civil liberties, the persecution of your political enemies and a generator of good old fashioned FEAR. Russia is our buddy now, China is a valuable trade partner, North Korea is China's problem. But what about Iran, situated in the middle of the world's oil fields, right next to Israel? Give Iran, with its huge army and stable government some nuclear weapons and you have a potent and lasting enemy, one that can give W. a whole lot of Article II justification. Hell, he might even buy Abramoff a little sympathy ("I was only arming Israel against Iran.")

Anyway, the story goes that the CIA (under Porter Goss's expert oversight) gave Iran a slightly flawed blueprint for a nuke, via an unstable Soviet agent who informed the Iranians of the flaw so that they could fix it and have a good blue print for a nuke. This is either extremely dumb or extremely clever. Take your pick.

The source is the NYT reporter who broke the "Bush wiretapped" story so we know he has good inside sources. The CIA is downplaying the significance of the blunder, but NOT DENYING that it happened (!!!!!!)

Dont assume that this did not happen just because you hope that this did not happen. And remember that Paksitan already has a nukes and the world has not ended. Iran isnt suicidal. It wont nuke its backyard just for kicks. Iran having a nuke doesnt mean the end of the world, even though W. will try to claim that it does. It just means that W. wont have to try to invade Iran with the troops that he doesnt have because they are all bogged down in Iraq. Instead, he can get down to some dirty Joe Mccarthy style politics at home.
