Quote of the...well, Millennium. |
|
President Bush said yesterday he would request $114 million in the next budget year to help teach U.S. students, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi Farsi and other languages that are rarely studied. The president said it is only natural that people who speak the same language relate better. "When somebody comes to me and speaks Texan, I know they appreciate the Texas culture," Bush told the U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education.

Wow, what a slam on REAL Texans! He is saying his illiterate, slurring, brain-numbing stupidity and verbal gaffes are "speaking Texan"? I hope the REAL Texans nail his arse to the wall!

There is no "Texan" language. Unless you count the words that come out of *'s mouth Texan. That would be insulting to all of Texas.

I believe it is legitimate to say some Texans speak with a 'drawl' at most. I guess no one ever taught bush the difference between an accent and a language. Figures!

I believe it's a lying, jingoistic drawl where the words are slurred together to produce an annoying sound.

But seriously, I believe that Bush insults Texas culture by pretending to represent it. Molly Ivins, Bill Moyers, and many others are more qualified than I am, to point out how he's tried to co-opt a Hollywoodized version of the dialects and customs of his adopted state. Actually, in his case, it's more like a parasitic relationship!

Bush pushing foreign languages. I was at the gym and the TVs (w/o sound) were on. I read the blurb and burst out laughing. Another woman in the gym asked me what was so funny. I said Bush wants kids to learn foreign languages. She asked why that was so funny. I told her I thought it was high time Bush learned to speak English.
