Can I hear a HALLELUJAH!!!!? "AP Poll: Congressional Democrats Favored"
AP Poll: Congressional Democrats Favored
By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - In an ominous election-year sign for Republicans, Americans are leaning sharply toward giving Democrats control of Congress, an AP-Ipsos poll finds. Democrats are favored 49 percent to 36 percent.

The poll was taken this week as Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to tax evasion, fraud and corruption charges and agreed to aid a federal investigation of members of Congress and other government officials.

President Bush's job approval remains low _ 40 percent in the AP-Ipsos poll. About as many approve of his handling of Iraq, where violence against Iraqis and U.S. troops has been surging.

"I don't think anyone is hitting the panic button," said Rich Bond, a former Republican National Committee chairman. "But there is an acute recognition of the grim environment that both parties are operating in."<snip>

we need to wait until something gets done about electronic election fraud. The public leaned heavily in favor of the Democratic presidential candidate last time, too, but the voting machines still gave it to the less favored candidate. As long as they have control of the vote-counting, the public's preference remains irrelevant.

11. The other 6% are the ultra-wealthy industrialists and anti-tax zealots
When something like 70% of Americans think they'll someday be among the top 10% AGI earners, you're going to see some spillover.

people go out and vote. The Repugs can no longer hide the fact that they have been taking bribes and other forms of corruption so their strategy will be to say - "the Democrats are dirty too" with the goal of bringing the approval rating for Congress as a whole down. They hope that people will be so disgusted that they will decide voting for one crook over another is not worth the trouble. Then the Repugs will marshall their fundiebot hordes to vote and voila, another resounding Repug mandate of 20% to 19%.

it doesn't mean a thing unless people go out and vote AND...

the votes are counted properly.

with Diebold and ESS counting the majority of our vote, IN SECRET, we are screwed.

It's called checks and balances and we don't have any

Some people say they are leaning toward giving Democrats control of Congress because they want to see changes. "I just don't like the direction our country is going in," said Steve Brown, a political independent from Olympia, Wash. "I think a balance of power would be beneficial right now."

(The system of checks and balances is an important part of the Constitution. With checks and balances, each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. This way, no one branch becomes too powerful. Each branch “checks” the power of the other branches to make sure that the power is balanced between them. )

19. I heard someone this morning
and for the life of me I can't remember who it was, :( Anyway, he said there were NO checks and balances from this repuke congress and now we see what happens when there is none...THIS SCANDAL. LBJ had a DEMOCRATIC Congress and they had checks and balances on HIM...much to his chagrin, but they had them! The Democrats have NEVER been as bad as this, ever.

12. Could this happen?
If the Abramoff scandal takes down several re pub congressman, and the RNC still wins back the house in the mid term elections in 2006, will this open peoples eyes to the problem with electronic voting machines and fixed elections?

"I don't think anyone is hitting the panic button" They should be! unless Mr. Bond already knows it doesn't matter who runs the RNC candidate will win.

22. how this will translate into specific races
remains to be seen.

for instance: here in king county, warshington, Dave Reichert is a freshman GOP rep. he is the former King Co. sherrif, and as such, "solved" the Green River Killer case. He positions himself as a law & order & apple pie moderate, and nervously triangulates every issue to toe the party line & placate his liberal district. if the Dems are to take back congress, he's got to go.

but i don't know if the stink of Bush can be made to adhere to him.

individual congressional districts can be tough nuts to crack, especially after they've been gerrymandered by Tom Delay.

28. what does this mean for impeachment?
Especially if the trend continues?
Why can't Dems now TAR congressional repukes with thier allegiance to shrub?
Why can't Dems now DEMAND impeachment hearings, forcing the repukes to come out and state their allegience to the shrub?
Why can't Dems use shrub's poor numbers and the repukes' weakening political position to force a referendum of sorts on impeachment?

Why? How could the possibly backfire? :hide:

30. What we really need to see is a state by state and district by district.
breakdown..i.e. how does it look in each particular race for each particular candidate?

Unfortunately, while this IPSOS poll is good news in general, I'm afraid it won't tell us the entire story.

In spite of the outcome of this poll, many Republicans still are from election proof districts which have been custom gerrymandered to insure that they always get re-elected. (Particularly here in Florida.) Also, no doubt, some Republicans have no opponent whatsoever. Finally there is the always popular, "Yeah Congress is a bunch of crooks, but not my guy" attitude which inevitably protects lots of crooks - (witness Duke Cunningham..)

So does anybody have a more detailed breakdown of the races that we can see so we can have a better idea of where we are and what we have to do to win back the Congress?

We are just too far behind, and with gerrymandering and the challenges of beating incumbents thrown in, I don't think it's in the cards.
