1. You're pretty articulate for a third-grader. |
|
 Sorry, couldn't resist.

(its my sig line!)
But do you think 3rd graders really get it? I have to explain it to my college students.
Maybe by the time I get them their brain cells have already been destroyed by technological 'multi-tasking.' :eyes:

4. I Explained It, In Third Grade Terms: |
|
It went something like this:
"Kids, Ben Franklin says if you give up your freedoms to get a little safety, you probably won't get either one."
We had a short discussion after I posted it on the board. Maybe it's a little simple, but I wanted to share that quote with my litle darlings, and they are little darlins'.

5. Use the bully on the playground analogy |
|
3rd graders will understand that!!
Goes something like this -
You can give the bully your lunch money so he doesn't beat you up, or you can gather your friends and all refuse at the same time to give up their money...

6. I expect they are darlings' -- I seem to recall liking my kid when |
|
he was a 3rd grader !
Seriously, I admire your ability to teach them at that age -- and your desire to challenge and stimulate their intelligence. We really do need to keep raising the bar, not lowering it. They'll meet the challenge.
Kudos!

Democracy is not a state in which people act like sheep.
I would far rather that India perished than that she won freedom as the sacrifice of truth.
Corruption and hypocrisy ought not to be inevitable products of democracy, as they undoubtedly are today.
The science of war leads one to dictatorship pure and simple. The science of nonviolence can alone lead one to pure democracy.
and, finally --
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him. Will he gain anything by it? Will it restore him to a control over his own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj (freedom) for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
Mahatma (Mohandas) Gandhi 1948
