He might have looked at the website, but I doubt it.
I used to get those shitty newsletters in NC. They'd actually list the offensive TV shows, and have their own rating system, with number of offences that occurred:
H=homosexual agenda, 7; S=sexuality, 5; L=language, 17; AC=anti-Christian, 2; and so on. I'm NOT making this up!!

A clergy friend of mine has a father in early stages of Alzheimer's. He told me he was slowly losing it, by describing a situation, then thinking to himself "OK - you can hide your own Easter Eggs."
It was funny - and sad. I love pathos.

He never got to meet my daughter (she's 9 but came to us at 2).
His is technically not Alzheimers, because they know the cause - 50 years of drinking 24/7.
My dad's in a lockdown facility; he went into a coma (they tried to detox him) 8 years ago; when he came out, he was completely psychotic. And now, he is just a body going on.

I'm really hoping this show survives, at least for a while, just to prove that the religious right can't forcibly shut down anything it wants to, at any point.
This is personal for me. Even if I hated the show (which I don't), I'd be fighting for its survival.

It wasn't too bad. I enjoyed it. Two hours is quite a long time for a debut show. I liked the priest guy. He did a good job with the character and the Jesus guy wasn't so bad. After the show was over our local news came on and the second story they had was about the show and they played some conversations of the show. According to the anchorwoman reporting they had just as many praises (I think she said more). One caller made the point that there are soldiers dying in Iraq and people still having trouble(s) with getting over the natural disasters and here people are worried about a tv show you can easily flip the channel. If we we liberals were trying to take off Pat Robertson off the air they would be going to the ACLU screaming. It's so pathetic.

115. I can see why the Fundies were up in arms over this ... |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 11:18 PM by NanceGreggs
Jesus is a regular cast member (and one can only IMAGINE the negotations required to seal THAT deal).
This show's Jesus is all about love, peace, accepting everyone's faults and foibles, but loving them nonetheless.
And then there's the Rev, all-too-human, who also accepts everyone around him, warts and all.
Just NOT the Jesus the Fundies worship. Were this a Fundie 'Jesus' show, the Saviour -- well, first of all, he wouldn't have TIME to be on a TV show, because he's too busy smiting Ariel Sharon and sending hurricanes to places that host gay pride parades.
But if he DID have the time, and AGREED to do a Fundie TV show like this one, he'd been yammerin' to the Rev about disowning his gay son, his lesbian sister-in-law, his adulterous father (the Bishop), and would be encouraging our young pastor to wage war on his neighbours and kill innocent Muslims.
So now you know why the Fundies are so upset -- how dare the rest of the world worship a Prince-of-Peace type Jesus, when there's a perfectly good hate-mongering, war profiteering Jesus out there waiting to be recognized.

It showed the Christ of the New Testament; loving; accepting; and forgiving.
It's a modern day "Waltons" showing the issues now faced rather than hidden and covered-up as was done in the past.
The fundamentalists should be seen as stupid and histrionic for avoiding this vanilla show.

of the New Testament, as well. After I saw the show, I watched Keith Oberman's show and saw the segment where people were interviewed about their opinion of NBC airing it. This was before the show tonight.
One woman - and I am paraphrasing here - said "it is NOT the Jesus of the Bible;" and I'm shouting at the TV, "Well then you don't really KNOW the Jesus of the Bible, do you??" And how could come to this conclusion without having seen the show first?
But yes, I really liked Rev. Daniel Webster's image of Jesus as he appeared in the show.

I guess the show's premise is "gee, um, clergypeople have, like, problems too"; but apparently their problems resolve themselves quite easily. One example: possession of five ounces of pot is a felony everywhere. It earns serious jail time, not community service.
These people's biggest problem is that they're all idiots. You don't leave a suspiciously cancelled check where your boss can find it. You don't blurt out in a police station that you're a pot dealer, not a smoker. (If the daughter really needed 4 grand that bad she could have sold the huge custom Italian tile mounted over the stove in the lavish kitchen of their enormous house. Is that a realistic portrayal of the way Episcopal clergy live? I obviously went into the wrong line of work...)
This show is just another soap opera, and "Soap" covered the subject better back in the 70s. After calling several plot twists (sis and secretary are lovers, the bishops are screwing each other) long before they lumbered across the screen, I hollered "Help me Jebus!" and stopped watching.

It started off slowly and I thought, hmmm, maybe it's not a comedy after all. But it quickly picked up in the humor department. I thought there were some very funny lines -- I was laughing out loud. It's like Desperate Housewives and Six Feet Under combined. It's got a very dysfunctional family, sex, drugs, religion, illness, etc. all rolled up into one with a good cast and excellent writing. I think it's going to be a great show as it continues to develop. I hope it lasts -- that Friday night slot is never a good sign.
