Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan): Bush’s spying raises concerns
Senator: Bush’s spying raises concerns
Brownback disagrees with legal rationale

By Scott Rothschild (Contact)

Saturday, December 24, 2005

Topeka — U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., on Friday said the Bush administration needed to answer questions about spying on Americans without court authorization.

And Brownback said he disagreed with the administration’s legal rationale, which he said could hamper future presidents during war.

“There are questions that should be examined at this point in time,” Brownback said during a news conference.

Bush has confirmed that he approved allowing the National Security Agency to monitor Americans without seeking warrants from a secret federal court that oversees the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA.

2. That may be, but it's still good to have Republicans

speaking out against this.

4. Yup. Hard for them to paint this as Democratic
positioning/whining when their own nearest and dearest are saying the same things.

This one's going to bite him, hard. And boy, will that be fun to watch.

8. What other Republicans have voiced their concerns?
Chuck Hagel?
Lindsey Graham?
Joe Lieberman?

9. LOL
Yeah, let's see Joe dive into this one.

Hasn't Spector spoken up? Or am I imagining that? And I would imagine we'd hear from people like McCain and Hagel... maybe Graham. But I don't know that we have.

3. Sam Brownback is what Rick Santorum would be if he wasn't such a dick.

He seems like a really friendly guy. Just very wrong on most issues. At least he's coming around on this.

7. Wow!
If Bush has lost the support of Brownback, then he must really be in serious trouble.

Isn't Brownback one of the senators that lives in some home sponsored by a very RW religious group?

10. "at this point in time," John Dean's immortal redundancy.
A nice homage.
