Gore has progressed a lot over the years as well. I know he used to be against the government funding abortions and voting against that when he was younger. People's opinions and views do change over the years and I think Gore is pretty progressive now days.

I quite frankly like knowing about the music I'm going to buy and movies and I like being able to monitor what my someday kids will watch and I don't like a lot of violence stuff either so I like knowing that. It's just a freakin sticker that you can throw away. Especially when I'm someday going to be, hopefully, a parent.

28. I believe he picketed the funeral of Gore's father
Any connection this nutjob had w/the Gore family has long since fizzled out.

http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?sid=184

1988
Phelps provides rooms for Democrat Al Gore's presidential campaign workers. Though the Phelps-Gore connection will grow increasingly distant, Phelps' oldest son, Fred Jr., is invited to the first Clinton-Gore inauguration in 1993.

By 1998, Gore will be seen as such an enemy by WBC that its members picket the funeral of Gore's father.

Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 07:31 PM by CBHagman
Here's the Mother Jones article on Phelps, with some information about the Gore family:

http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/1999/03/lauerman.html

"The Rev. Fred Phelps stands out from a block away. Sixty-nine years old, Phelps is tall and reedy; his white hair billows out from under a cowboy hat. Like a latter-day Moses, he holds in each hand bright yellow-and-orange posters: 'Baptist 666 Fags' and 'Matt in Hell.' You need to get closer, though, to recognize the accompanying photographs: the Rev. Jerry Falwell and Matthew Shepard, the 21-year-old Wyoming man beaten to death because he was gay.

"It's December 8 in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, the day of the funeral for Al Gore Sr., a former senator and the vice president's father. Gore has earned Phelps' ire because, according to Phelps, his son 'sold his soul to the fag agenda.' Falwell earned it partly because he called Phelps a 'first-class nut.' And Shepard -- 'that little fag,' as Phelps refers to him -- earned it, well, by being gay. It's in this way, a Day-Glo vision of defiant hatred, that Phelps wants the world to see him."

Various stuff from the past decade and more:

http://www.aegis.com/news/ads/1993/AD931690.html

"The Clinton administration's new health care system guarantees 'health security' for people infected with HIV/AIDS, promised Tipper Gore Saturday at the 1993 capital 'Aidswalk.' 'In many ways, AIDS and other chronic diseases represent the ultimate test of a reformed health care system,' said Gore, wife of Vice President Al Gore, as she kicked off the event. Sources said that over 10,000 participants marched in the walk, raising over $1.25 million for local AIDS education, research, and care. The event was sponsored by the Whitman-Walker Clinic."

I also recall hearing that the Gores were staunch supporters of the Whitman-Walker clinic in D.C. On edit: While the clinic is not exclusively for the gay and lesbian community, it has a long record of support in and service to the GLBT community in the D.C. area.

Human Rights Campaign/Common Dreams article:

http://www.commondreams.org/news2000/0211-01.htm

I hope this helps clarify things.

Just moved to San Francisco a few weeks ago, which set off some interesting speculation about making a run for governor in the next election or something...

hmmm... it will be interesting to see what his agenda is.. If speculations about him making a run for Govenor, he might be trying to disavow this connection by smooozing it up with most wealthy gay community in the state.

Just speculating.... thazzall i'm doin' ...jest speculatin'.... ;)

31. I guess that suing the **** out of people who have had enough of one's
hate-filled presence must be very lucrative. In the article, he says that he and his fellow nutbars spend about $250,000 per year traveling. (of course, it also said there were about 213 members, when the last I read--there were about 50--and pretty nearly all in-bred, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging relatives)

and out of all the miners and their wives that I knew, it was the women that scared me. They are the type to be plowing the field, stop, squat, give birth, throw the baby over their shoulders and call for the horse to move on. The men are tough, but the women ... whooooooo boy, don't mess with them.

I got to know some good old boys and their kin ..... the men can be mighty fierce too.

I really hope Phelps goes ..... and the W.Va. State Police (the locals would stay the hell out)
don't interfere ...... Outsiders bothering folks @ burial ..... hell some 13 year boy would do the

He's just a big attention-getter. Back in September, Phelps said he was going to Sweden to "kill the King because he's a Fag Lover". The Secret Service was involved. There were articles about this man in the Swedish newspapers.

We were all crossing our fingers that he would go. He would be thrown in jail the minute he landed in Stockholm.

He never went. He's just a big Blowhard Whimp.

40. Here's how it works in Phelpsworld:
1) All gays are evil;

2) America doesn't execute gay people;

therefore

3) America is evil.

4) God punishes evil.

therefore

5) God is punishing America.

I know, I know. The old fool's nuttier than a Christmas fruitcake/crazier than a sprayed roach/battier than a church belfry. But that's how he "reasons." It's not about West Virginia. It's about an evil world sorly in need of a good damning.

41. No, it's not; it's about a pathology. A group pathology.
I finally read the Wikipedia entry about Fred Phelps last night. I don't think we are dealing with a person whose twisted logic even makes sense in Bizarroworld. Nope. The only way Phelps and his church make ANY sense at all is if you conclude that he is a person with a pathological need (perhaps because it gives him some sort of sexual gratification) to hate and revile others.

There is no rhyme or reason for his hate, although he seems to have glommed onto gays as being especially worthy and created some sort of mythology that America deserves to have bad things happen to it because it hasn't yet executed its entire gay population. But we're talking about a man who has persuaded an entire church full of people to believe that whenever anything bad happens to ANYONE who is not part of their group, it is cause for rejoicing.

That's not just anti-gay. That's sick.

It does not surprise me, after having read about them, that they'd be rejoicing over this latest tragedy. It's what they do. Phelps's church is defined by the basic core belief that its members are going to heaven and that everyone else is going to hell--so the sooner they die and go there, the better. Phelps and his group even make a point of saying that the only thing that saddens them in a mass tragedy is that MORE people didn't die. I'm sure they're even now expressing deep sorrow that one of the miners has survived this long.

There's just no way to even call this a legitimate religion. Phelps and his people are like Jim Jones and the People's Temple. They don't always do everything they promise to do, but if they do this and it ends up being another mess like that was, the scary thing is that nobody should be surprised.

Hmmm... now I'm wondering just where Rev. Schicklgruber, um, I mean Phelps gets all the money for these wild escapades of his. I mean, really, his church membership is somewhere between six and eight, yet somehow he always manages to be where the action is. He even turned up in front of O'ahu's oldest and well-respected church with not only the "Fag Church" sign but a shiny all-new one just for us: "God Hates Hawaii"! :eyes:

50. Well, he is probably gay himself, since the closeted types seem to be
the ones who are most enraged by other homosexuals.

** stands up and says he will defend the sanctity of marriage while allowing a male prostitute in the White House. Southern Baptist Imam Lathem (sp?) was just arrested in Oklahoma trying to solicit male sex after preaching about the sin of homosexuality.

So the best way to get this old coot's goat is to encourage him to come out of the closet, admit who he is and get some therapy.

"Come out Come out
