Couric and Shepherd Smith finalists for the CBS Evening News???
KILL ME NOW!!!!!!

Via NewsHounds....

...As for Katie Couric, NBC will have to scramble. The online subscriber-only publication tvbrepaper.com reported Wednesday that CBS chief Leslie Moonves didn't contradict Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto when Cavuto said there are two finalists for the "CBS Evening News" anchor job: Couric and FNC's Shepard Smith.

4. LOL! Just what America needs!
Why not get Rip Taylor to start reading the news. There is really no difference any more.

17. That made me laugh.
I can see Rip throwing confetti and running around the newsroom on a big story day.

5. They forced out Dan Rather, the heir to Walter Cronkite.
And now they want to hire Katie Couric or Shepard Smith.

In the Edward R. Murrow, where the FUCK are the journalists?!!!!

This is CBS for Christ's sake!

6. Oh hell no!
I personally don't understand why they don't just keep Schieffer. Unless he's already planning on retirement or something, or has no interest in the job. He's far superior to either Couric or that FAUX News hack. Couric... I just don't understand what the point is of having her anchor the more serious evening newscast when she seems to be very popular and accepted as a fluff morning news anchor. And Shephard Smith- oh f$@&ing hell no if they choose him as their anchor. CBS will go from being my favorite of the network newscasts to the one I never watch. No FAUX personalities should be considered credible journalists and should stay at their scary little propaganda outlet. Too much of their right-wing blather is coming out of the mainstream media these days as is.

good on this subject on the Katie Couric appointment on Larry King last night. He is dead set against it.

13. He said rather than pay her $20M
CBS should hire real journalists to be stationed across the globe where they can collect real news. He said the media is collecting millions from advertising and not presenting news as a public service for citizens. He added further that there should be no ads during news. He was scathing in his criticism of the new approach to news.

10. You make a good point!
That pic is definitely a strong case for your argument. It's not just in that pic, though... there's something about the guy's eyes that is somehow "metallic" or something like that, and has always given me the creeps.

And the mouth -- look at it. There's no way a real human has a mouth like that. Mannequin mouth!

14. Shepard Smith
is better than Caty IMHO. I think that he has a chance of change after seeing him on the Katrina coverage. So, best of two worsts SS over KK.

15. Couric or Shepherd for 'Evening News'? Ludicrous. More shame on America.
Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 10:47 AM by spanone
Now that's what this country needs, some 'feel-good' evening news. You know, news that doesn't offend. Good-feely news stories, not that shit about people dying in Iraq or wars and stuff, things good Americans can get a handle on. Like Lindsey Lohans love life or Tom Cruise on Oprah's sofa, hard hitting news that Americans can disseminate. Why not Couric or Shepherd? They'll feed America all the shit-news it wants.
:sarcasm:

18. I think the suits already see a future
with no "network news" at all. Ratings keep falling, other outlets keep emerging, I bet all three networks' long term plans have them phasing out their evening news programs all together in the next 10 years. If that is the case, why would they care about integrity or the long term health of their new departments? Go for flash and charm and a short term bump in interest by hiring a lightweight.

19. Might be longer than 10 years
The ratings for the three newscasts are still many, many times any of the cable "news" shows. Even the cable "news" leading Faux. O'Really's ratings are dwarfed by any one ABC, CBS, and NBC newscast.

21. I don't think they are looking at
news rating vs. cable. They are looking at news ratings v. Wheel of Fortune. At this point any broadcast program will dwarf a cable show because of the number of households reached. What they are probably looking at is the huge costs involved in maintaining a news department and the overall profitability of the time slot.

Perky news. Perky, perky, perky. 24/7. Perkiness over substance.

How about a real newscaster, CBS? How about an actual journalist? Criminy.

I was impressed (almost against my will) with Shepard Smith in New Orleans, although I reserve judgment on whether his epiphany there was permanent or not.
