Poll question: I decided to watch "Book of Daniel" AFTER the Fundies Freaked. and you?
Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 12:52 AM by goodboy
I wasn't planning to watch it until I heard the screeching sound of Fundie Panties being Sanctimoniously twisted, twisted and twisted some more.

Who else did the Fundies' convert into Book of Daniel viewers, whether out of curiosity or spite?

1. I stopped in at my dad's and it was coming on so we half watched it.
Seemed ok.

I guess the fundies are all up in arms over the "vision/ghost" of Jesus that Daniel can see?

4. It had a two hour premier tonight.
I watched it and I plan to keep watching it. The lead character is an Episcopal priest and his conscience appears in the form of Jesus. I saw nothing in that to be disturbing.

The man also has an alcoholic wife, a daughter arrested for posession of pot, a gay son, an adopted oversexed son, and a son who died of leukemia.

34. I watched it and enjoyed it. Don't forget that the priest's father, a
Bishop is having an affair with a woman Bishop (wonderfully played by Ellen Burstyn), his mother has Alzheimers, and the daughter was arrested for pot..not because she smoked it, but because she was dealing it. Also, the priest (I adore Aidan Quinn) is addicted to vicodin.

6. I thought, for NETWORK tv, it was pretty damn funny, and interesting
The very STEREOTYPES and "less than PC" portrayals in it are SURE to piss off EVERYONE!!! The pot smoking black housekeeper, the Italian mob-connected Catholic priest pal, the pill popping episcopalian reverend, his "I need a martini" wife, the altzheimer's mother who is in-n-out at the drop of a hat, with the bishop father having the affair with the female bishop, and the gay son, pot selling daughter, bi sister-in-law, and the horny adopted Chinese son....and this is just the first episode!!! I can imagine outrage coming from ALL CORNERS!!! There's enough for EVERYONE!! But I would not be surprised if they piss off more people every week, and that, IMO, is a good thing! And while some bits are almost too easy, the writing is fairly crisp, too!

The surfer dude-ish Jesus, who looks UNCOMFORTABLY like the image of Jesus that is ADORED by the fundie set, is just the icing on the cake! There's so much else to outrage the easily outraged...the War on Xmas crowd won't be the only ones having a cow!

12. An excellent summation!
I watched partly out of curiosity and partly because I wanted to help the premiere ratings just to irk the fundies.

I think the show is generally pretty innocuous, but it certainly has something for everyone to be either offended or amused by.

The post-premiere fundie reviews are going to be a lot of fun! :D

Really
It's how you know Jesus even though Jesus is more middle eastern of course. He appeared how the guy knew him as. I think what's more important is how they protrayed his character. He was like your best friend and I loved their relationship and how they interacted together. I loved when Jesus offered him a piece of candy instead of the drugs.

53. If Jesus is simply an "idea," sure, that would fly
But if you actually believe that Jesus walked around a few thousand years ago, and lived amongst his fellows, he looked a helluva lot more like a young Yassir Arafat than he did that guy on TV last night--unless Mary was a Northern European on holiday in Bethlehem when she found herself in rather dire straits!

I enjoyed that similarity too. I didn't watch the whole thing - came in about a half hour in, then watched for an hour. Had to read Harry Potter to my son, so I missed the rest. But I enjoyed what I saw, and Aidan whathisname, so easy on the eyes! Good luck fundies getting rid of this one!

who apparently have squirreled away the missing $3 million from the church's funds that would have built a new school. I love it - the neglected wife lost lots of weight and got romantically involved with her husband's very hot young secretary!

55. To be technically correct, the sister in law is bi!
The secretary was brought into the marriage as one of a threesome to "spice things up!" Though they did acknowledge that she "pulled a similar stunt" as it were, back at VASSAR, and they assumed she had "gotten over it!"

Whatever her orientation, the whole thing is rich!

10. Why I watched
Garrett Dillahunt, who portrays the "hey, that's life" Jesus, appeared in Deadwood season 1 as Jack McCall, the coward who shot Buffalo Bill in the back; and in season 2 as Francis Wolcott, an amoral mining agent with a penchant for killing prostitutes. He did such a brilliant job of playing these creepy, sadistic characters that it just tickled me to see him play JC.

I bailed shortly after the first hour, driven away by the stick figure characters, the bad bad bad bad dialog, and the idea of a minister living in a house so lavish that the kitchen alone would cost more than he made in a year. It was, as the kids say, the suck.

Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 03:20 AM by Divernan
WHen he told his wife, "The money's missing!" Her first response was, "The FAMILY money?" His reply, "No, the church building fund money."

Episcopalians do a lot of outreach but basically they're a pretty wealthy bunch.

Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 04:29 PM by Gormy Cuss
but it's not true that most Episcopalians are wealthy -- far from it.

The pinheads protesting this series don't seem to be from the ranks of the Episcopal Church. Hmm.
Maybe that's because your average Episcopalian isn't consumed with telling everyone else the one true way to be a Christian.

Odd that there were two bishops in that story line and there was no mention of their diocesan duties. It would be in bad form for a married bishop to be screwing a suffragan in the same diocese.

54. But, it WASN'T!!!! That is next week's HOOK
The mean ass mother of the martini drinking wife was GONNA deed it to them, but the deed got burned in the cabana fire after the marriage, and she was saying, as the credits rolled, that they would only get the house over HER DEAD BODY!

They were trying to get a loan against the house to start building the school, because the money had not yet turned up.

Where it sits right now is that the Reverend can only get the cash back if he agrees to let the mobbed up construction company do the work....

11. Wasn't planning to watch ...
... until all the Fundies made a fuss.

I owe them a debt of gratitude - would have missed a promising new show if it wasn't for them.

We now have Jesus Christ as a viable character in three TV shows -'South Park', 'Rescue Me', and now the 'Book of Daniel'. All three portray Christ as an all-too-human man, who invariably sees the faults of those around him -- and can't help loving them anyway -- yeah, kind of like the REAL Jesus ...

I guess that's the Fundies' problem with these kinds of portrayals - they're into JESUS2006.COM, the media-savvy saviour with a flare for smiting places like New Orleans, and a mean streak a mile long for non Wal-Mart shoppers who don't say 'Merry Christmas' when they're spending their Christian bucks.

Oh, well, gone are the days of "Gimme Me That Ol' Time Religion" -- it's time to play X-BOX-CHRIST and smite thy enemies who does't not agree with thyself ...

19. Funny how people relate to the 'Jesus' ...
... we see depicted on TV shows that the Fundies JUST HATE ( a la South Park)!

I guess that's because most of them wouldn't know the REAL Jesus if he walked up to them on the street and kicked them in the ass.

Of course, if the REAL Jesus did come back, kicking these Fundies in the ASS would probably be No.1 on his 'Things-To-Do List'!

13. no I didn't watch but...........
.......now I'm thinking if the Fundies have such an exteme reaction to it, maybe I should check it out!!

Olbermann interviewed a Minster from the Council of Churches tonight about various issues. I don't remember which religion he represents but he made a lot of sense to me!! I found myself thinking, if this guy says the same kinds of things in church, I might even be willing to attend his church sometime!

He basically said Robertson is nuts for making the Sharon comment. He said that Robertson only said it to gain support for his conservative agenda. They also talked about the Book of Daniel. He pointed to the fact that there have been several shows in recent yrs that deal with religion and coping with the realitites of life. Shows like Touched by an Angel and Joan of Arcadia. And he added, this is just one more and he said, although he hadn't seen it yet, he didn't think it should be a big deal. (Keith also questioned the logic of someone who objects so strongly about a program without having seen it)

And to add a personal opinion of my own...........do these Fundies know what a remote is for? If you don't like what's on TV, DON'T WATCH IT!!!

When I was younger and my brother would steal one of my toys, my mom would always tell me to ignore him. She said he would lose interest in the toy very quickly and then I could take my toy back. It worked EVERY time.

I wonder why the fundies can't seem to figure that out. I missed the show because I worked late, but I want to see it out of curiosity, thanks to the fundies...

What would you expect in Bo-Jo Land (Upstate SC - Greenville, home of Bob Jones University).

59. I watched it
and I liked it.
I would of missed it if the freepers didn't make a big deal about it.

Nice job freepers, NBC must be thankful for your help in bringing in viewers.

62. I'll watch it because of yummy Aidan Quinn.

And the fact that it makes the fundies nuts is a bonus.
