By George Packer about the Iraq war.
He even answers the question about why went invaded in the frist place (not a simple answer...each person who urged war had a different reason) and every single horrid bad decision from there on out. The author is probably a "progressive" by nature but the book is not partisan. It is straight out factual reporting. By recounting the story of a Dem father who lost his son in Iraq, he helps explain how hard it is/will be to talk about the war to people who have lost kids over there or feel guilt about sending our kids there to die.
He also talks about how/why the Dems didn't strike a cord with voters and how we might have better "framed" the issue. (No, that's too shallow, its not about framing, its about what is wrong.)
The GOP ran this war not based on reality but based on ideology (this was not a guerilla war, they said, and if it was, the history of our "loss" in Vietnam against guerilla's is not a problem because we didn't lose Vietnam, we could have won. Reinventing history along with reality to fit their ideological goals.
It will make you mad but it will arm you with ALL the facts in one volume. The author was on Jon Stewart this week. He's my new hero.
If you hate government, as the GOP does, you screw up everything you touch. New Orleans is not surprise based on the way these guys are running our country. It seems we should be able to educate American about these creeps.

I saw him on TDS the other night and I was so impressed with his take on things, that I instinctively knew this book HAD to be worth reading.

he explained for me my ambivalence about the anti-war movement. As much as I hate this war (I still get a physical reaction in my stomach when I think about it...as I have since I first realized in 2002 that bush was really gonna do it) I do feel some responsibility to these people and the thought of walking away doesn't sit well with me either.
But we can't let bush keep making mistakes.
It's a page turning read...I couldn't put it down.
