"Readers responded with dismay and outrage to last week's column about social-conservative groups who oppose making a new cervical cancer vaccine part of the routine roster of immunizations that all girls receive before puberty.
The vaccine, which should be available this year, knocks out the human papillomavirus, known as HPV, that causes most cervical cancers. Because HPV is sexually transmitted, some so-called family-values groups fear that if the vaccine is routinely given to young girls it will encourage sexually promiscuous behavior.
``I still remember Tuesday, November 21st, 1995, at 1:15 in the morning. That was when I stood by my wife's bed and watched her die from cervical cancer,'' Deckrow wrote. ``It was exciting when I heard that a vaccine was nearly ready that could prevent others from suffering as my wife did. How dare the morality police or anyone else who wants to prescribe acceptable conduct keep a much-needed drug that promises to save many lives from becoming available?''
Ann Pianetta of Palo Alto e-mailed to say that those who balk at giving the vaccine to young girls may forget that cancer does not discriminate, and people may not know if their partners have been exposed to HPV. ``The one argument that you left out for our `right-wing' friends is that they can be affected too,'' Pianetta wrote. ``This vaccination will work on people who do not step outside their marriage. Cancer can come to anyone at any time. Monogamous or not.''
Many readers expressed frustration that, once again, social-conservative groups that have gained a foothold in the Bush administration are trying to impose their moral values on public health policy and education. ``How could anyone be against a vaccine that could prevent most cases of cervical cancer?'' Frank Linn of Saratoga asked in an e-mail. ``Of course, these are the same folks who are against stem-cell research and who are trying to replace mainstream science education in public schools with their religious myths.''
