RW'ers want women to die
"Readers responded with dismay and outrage to last week's column about social-conservative groups who oppose making a new cervical cancer vaccine part of the routine roster of immunizations that all girls receive before puberty.

The vaccine, which should be available this year, knocks out the human papillomavirus, known as HPV, that causes most cervical cancers. Because HPV is sexually transmitted, some so-called family-values groups fear that if the vaccine is routinely given to young girls it will encourage sexually promiscuous behavior.

``I still remember Tuesday, November 21st, 1995, at 1:15 in the morning. That was when I stood by my wife's bed and watched her die from cervical cancer,'' Deckrow wrote. ``It was exciting when I heard that a vaccine was nearly ready that could prevent others from suffering as my wife did. How dare the morality police or anyone else who wants to prescribe acceptable conduct keep a much-needed drug that promises to save many lives from becoming available?''

Ann Pianetta of Palo Alto e-mailed to say that those who balk at giving the vaccine to young girls may forget that cancer does not discriminate, and people may not know if their partners have been exposed to HPV. ``The one argument that you left out for our `right-wing' friends is that they can be affected too,'' Pianetta wrote. ``This vaccination will work on people who do not step outside their marriage. Cancer can come to anyone at any time. Monogamous or not.''

Many readers expressed frustration that, once again, social-conservative groups that have gained a foothold in the Bush administration are trying to impose their moral values on public health policy and education. ``How could anyone be against a vaccine that could prevent most cases of cervical cancer?'' Frank Linn of Saratoga asked in an e-mail. ``Of course, these are the same folks who are against stem-cell research and who are trying to replace mainstream science education in public schools with their religious myths.'' "

8. Or how about
just androginizing (I know its not a word) all of them. They obviously hate sex so they don't need any of the gear, right?

Oh, and they will have to be monitored, but they are OK with that :)

4. This is part of the war on human sexuality being waged by...
Big Business through the Bush Administration, the Republican Party and Christianity (mainstream as well as fundamentalist).

The bottom-line element is that innumerable studies prove a sexually frustrated population compensates by becoming excessively, even savagely materialistic, substituting orgies of impulse buying for eros.

Here is another manifestation of the same war on sexual expression:

Wake up, people. It's not that Bush intends to impose theocracy -- he's already imposing it: yet another manifestation of what Gore was talking about when he said (in America's most suppressed political speech ever) our liberty has never been in greater jeopardy.

5. It'll take a while
but the day will come when a young woman will look at her parents from her hospital bed where she's dying of cervical cancer and want to know why they denied her the right to live.

Kids get so many vaccinations and I'll bet the majority of them could only tell you what 1 or 2 of them are without asking their parents. Why not vaccinate the child and just not tell her if they're so worried? Or tell her that it's against a type of cancer without telling her how it's spread? If she doesn't know that it's sexually spread, how is that going to cause her to be promiscuous?

6. That's OUTRAGEOUS!
WHO the hell do they think they are playing with the lives of people? If they don't want THEIR daughters to have the vaccine, that's THEIR choice, but why the HELL are they trying to dictate what other people do? GET THESE PEOPLE OUT OF OUR GOVERNMENT! NOW! They have NO RIGHT to force their religious beliefs onto others. I have HAD IT with these assholes.

7. This is amazing to me

I didn't even know that most forms of cervical cancer were caused by a sexually transmitted virus until this vaccine was discovered. I am male, so that may have been a factor, but with all of the other STDs out there, I'm sure that the confusion is not mine alone.

That being said, its not like this will stop gonorrhea, syphilis, or pregnancy all of which are still deterrents to having sex. All the CDC (and most other normal people in this world) want is to spare women, as much as they can, the trauma and tragedy of as many forms of cancer as they can.

Its too bad a vaccine can't be found to treat stupidity.

on edit: Also, don't they realize that the only thing that really encourages teenagers to have sex is, well, that sex is AWESOME! You can't take that away no matter how hard you try. Teenagers will always have sex. They always have and always will.
