Fla. Officer Left Gun In Bathroom Before Cheney Event

POSTED: 1:56 pm EST March 28, 2006
UPDATED: 3:22 pm EST March 28, 2006

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- A Boca Raton police officer left her handgun in a public bathroom at a resort shortly before Vice President Dick Cheney arrived for a fundraiser.

Authorities found the loaded pistol while making a security sweep of the Boca Raton Resort & Club on March 6. The gun belonged to Sgt. Nicole Girardi, who was reprimanded by her supervisor, Capt. Matthew Duggan.

"Upon return of the sidearm, you assumed full responsibility for the event and in doing so recognizing the gravity of the issue," Duggan wrote in a letter about the incident placed in Girardi's personnel file. Duggan noted that a similar mistake in the future could cost Girardi her job.

Secret Service spokesman Steve Caruso said the agency was aware of the incident but declined to comment further, adding that it was resolved before Cheney arrived.

1. Damn, the Fla. cops are just a stupid as the Ga. ones!
You have no idea how many cops have had their own guns taken away from them, and many times used on THEM! The worst case is when the convice, who was on his way to trial, took a gun from the woman "supposed to be" guarding him, shot her, went to the court room and shot the Judge and the attorney, then fled, and was missing for many hours!

It never stops amazing me at the poor training these officers must receive!

My closest friend in Pgh, Pa was a Twp. Cop. I well remembe he told me the FIRST thing they teach you in the Acadamy is "Your piece is your life! you guard it WITH you life, and NEVER give it up to ANYONE!"

This idiot in Fla. LEFT IT IN A BR????????

2. Too be honest it might have been a subconcious slip...
If I knew I'd soon be in the same room with Cheney, I probably wouldn't trust myself with a gun nearby.

3. Sounds like placenta brain
I'd lay odds that Officer Girardi is pregnant.
