What is the biggest difference between liberals and conservatives? |
|
I am a liberal,I think I am so lucky to live in this society, taxes are a part of this great society and I am willing to pay them to live here. I will not shirk this obligation for good roads, safe streets etc.

3. The Conservatives adore the rich and deplore the poor. |

Kind of an anti-Christ schism. Their self worth is determined in their minds by their ability to accumulate wealth.

. . . and all the people who are sick or weak -- well, they should clear out of the gene pool anyway, and make way for their natural betters.
Sound familiar? (Hint: Munich Party Conference, 1934.)

|
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 01:05 AM by hopeisaplace
people who are not conservative that they are conservative...sorta like getting them to pull the trigger on themselves - so the Conservatives in Power can get what they want. I think a lot of people who vote conservative have no idea what the general principles are that distinguish the two parties..these voters tend not to be "readers". They tend to be easily influenced by headlines and TV. They are told half truths and lies, and these "conservatives" rah-rah their way to the voting booth (which is owned by republicans anyway) to hand themselves up for the sacrifice they don't even know they are a part off. They then walk or drive home maybe praying, maybe wishing, that they don't lose their job, not knowing they just voted for the party most likely to make that loss happen. They are BLINDED BY THE LIGHT..so to speak.

13. I would say the biggest difference is a social conscious. |
|
Conservatives think that what is good for them is inherently good. The effects that their actions have on society are of little consequence.
Liberals on the other hand understand that in order for a society to function its members have to make a commitment to the common good. We pay attention the the consequences of our actions and don't claim that those who may be hurt by them are at fault.

There is welfare, and there is WELFARE. The idea of a social safety net is rooted in a framework of "that what you do unto the least of my brothers, you do unto me..." Much can be said about a nation/civilization by how wide the stratification is between the rich & the poor, and how the poor are treated in that society.
Then there is corporate welfare. Ah yes, the giving of our tax dollars to ensure the the wealthiest become even wealthier, and always on the backs of the working class & the poor. The thing about corporate welfare is that there is no small percentage of recipients (like social programs) who are scammers, the fact is that ALL CORPORATE WELFARE is a scam and a fraud on the American people.
It is inconceivable to me how anyone would direct their attention and wrath upon the poor for recieving services when the wealthiest are stealing the wealth from our treasury by the truckload. If a person is concerned about fraud, they should begin at the top and when that is resolved they can work their way down the latter. Until then, people who want to hate on the poor should STFU.

23. The main German parties sums it up: |
|
The Right are the 'Christian Democrats'. The left are the 'Social Democrats'.
But I'd much prefer the German Right to the American Right.
btw I'm a Social Democrat who is a Christian. Being from the UK it makes me politically a Liberal Democrat, and now being in the US a Democrat. Green would work in Germany but Green here makes as much sense as voting Republican. It doesn't do a lot of good.

You make a good point. You have to be in the dark before you appreciate the the light.
But no one group has a monopoly on the light. Conservatives & Liberals are of one family. They used to get along just fine while disagreeing.
This said, the radicals in D.C. seem to have a monopoly on the divisive process of selling darkness as light.

30. well, actually there are more liberals that really |
|
believe in conserving. Conserving the environment, conserving our treasury for the use by the people, conserving our families--of course, in a very progressive way. We're not afraid of evolution, of making changes when necessary. We also believe in conserving our Constitution and Bill of Rights--so we are conserving our traditions and heritage. Republican neo-cons want the Robber Barons back, they're into me first, screw the rest of you until they need something, until they get desparate. No welfare for those lazy women and children, until they need a hand out. Who needs Workers Comp. until they get injured. See, they deserve it, the rest don't.

36. How we view the world. Cooperation vs competition |
|
Or, cooperation vs greed. Do we share the earth with one another because down deep we have more in common than we do that seperates us, or do we find ways to seperate us because we can make a profit of that?.
Think about every issue that has been thrown into the ring, they all fit into my paradigm: woman's reproductive health, GLBT's rights, seperation of church & state, foreign policy, health care, energy, the environment, workers rights, etc...
