1. Been A Rough 24 Hours In Chicago...
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 01:23 AM by KharmaTrain
The big fire at the historic Pilgrim Baptist Church destroyed the "birthplace" of Gospel music the other day

What is was...

What's is left...

It started life as a synagogue designed by Louis Sullivan and has been the site of some of the greatest soul and gospel performances and performers. Lous Rawls grew up in the shadow of this place. So did Sam Cooke, Mahalia Jackson, Curtis Mayfield and many, many others. I'm hoping they can/will rebuild, but it just won't be the same.

Lou introduced this "northsider" to the term "The Hawk" in the late 60's. I knew what he was refering to, and still consider Dead End Street among my favorite. Lou will surely be missed. Even though I don't like to drink, Lou...this Bud's for you...

3. I didn't have either the television or the radio on yesterday at all.
When I finally turned on Channel 5 at 5:00 pm, I was devastated to learn that my beloved hometown had lost two "originals" that made this wonderful place what it is and will continue to be.

RIP, Mr. Rawls and I'm hoping that the Pilgrim Baptist Church will be re-built.

5. I didn't think I needed to comment on that unfortunate incident.
It got all of about 1.5 minutes mention on Channel 5 and they even showed the protestors at the Hilton.

The anchors didn't even make any snarky remarks about the abovementioned protestors. Maybe Larry Wirt and his cohorts at WMAQ are starting to get the fact that GWB is persona non grata in Chicago.

6. Wert's One Of Us
I've known Larry since his Loop party animal days. He's definitely not a wingnut. LOL. Far from it.

I was laughing at the local coverage...Channel 7 reported how people were inconvenienced all over downtown for asshat's motorcade and the TV shot at landing at O'Hare showed almost no one on the tarmac waiting for him.

Hastert brought him in for a desperately needed fundraiser and "get out the troops" rally. The state party is a disaster, his hold on power is hanging by a thread and his big money buddies at the CBOT and Merc aren't writing the big checks they used to.

I had to laugh when the bastard tried to joke about the Sox winning the pennant since the Cubbies are owned by the Repugnican Tribune company and Reinsdorf and most of the team are Democrats! I wonder if Ozzie will wear that Venezuelan flag and give a shout out to Hugo Chavez when the Sox visit the White House.

Cheers...

7. Has the Chimpemperor even invited the Sox to the White House?
I have to admit I missed the comment about the Sox winning the pennant/WS. Does * have a problem that the Sox beat the Astros? Methinks he does...

Please tell me you're joking re: Reinsdorf and the Dems. I know that Chimpy is a complete moron, but even after the Bulls were dismantled in 1998, the blame all fell on Krause not Reinsdorf.

Wouldn't you love to see Ozzie draped in the Venezuelan flag at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave?

Forget about the "shout out" for Hugo Chavez, that ain't gonna happen, but Ozzie draped in his country's flag would say it all....

And BTW KharmaTrain, I'm a South Side Cub fan who was and is still absolutely delighted that the Sox won a championship.

Hopefully "Da Bears" will continue Chicago's short-lived winning tradition next Saturday against whoever they get in the NFC playoffs.

8. The Videos Of A Pained Poppy & Babs Said It All
I was laughing during the world series seeing that ugly bat jinxing the Astros. Things go so bad Poppy didn't even show for Game 4 and Neil sat in.

I'm not joking about Reinsdorf and the Dems. I recall he hosted a private party for the Clintons during the DNC in '96 and his company, Balcor, was a heavy Democratic corporate donor (they were big supporters of Abner Mikva). Krause took the blame cause he deserved it. LOL. But I appreciated the championship run of the 90's...I was just happy with one.

I'm a lifelong Northside Sox fan...in the midst of Cubbieland, but it was great to see the entire city come together...but the rivalry aside so we all could see the city win a championship. Now, hopefully this gets the Tribune Company (who had the AL trophy marched right into their press room) off their butts and there's a Crosstown series soon. It'd be a pleasure to beat the Cubs in the bottom of the 9th of game 7 :spank:

I think the Sox are scheduled to visit the White House when the go to Baltimore next May...or that's been the tradition. Maybe some of the players will blow off junior booosh like Jordan did to his old man.

Yep...here's hoping the best for Da Bears. I froze my season tickets off for years at Wrigley and Soldier Field watching some of the worst teams ever (remember Bobby Douglass???). This has been one hell of a sports year in this area...and beating Houston was almost as good as kicking Texas' ass.

Cheers and go Chicago!!

9. If and when my Cubs ever win a NL pennant, or God forbid,
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 05:04 AM by mohinoaklawnillinois
a World Series, my first thought will be of my Mom.

She was a real "diehard" Cub fan. During the middle to the late 1960's, when old man Wrigley still owned the Cubs, she would take me and my brother Tom up to Wrigley every Friday afternoon when the Cubs were in town for Ladies Day.

Mind you, we would take the El from 63rd St & Loomis Avenue and always change trains once we got to the underground part of the El, because our portion of the El (red line) at that time didn't stop at Addison Avenue (green line).

To be completely honest my Mom was a total baseball fan. Even though the Cubs during that period were the perennial "losers", I do believe it was her mission in life to expose both of us to the pure joy of baseball.

My brother Tom, for some unknown reason, was a NY Yankees fan, but I remember watching live and in person, Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Willie Mays, Lou Brock (the absolute worst trade the Cubs ever made), Hank Aaron, Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, Ernie Banks (even though he's a puke), Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Johnny Bench and as much as it pains me to even mention this name Pete Rose, et al in the "friendly confines".

Mom loved baseball, in fact, when I asked her years later; what her absolute favorite baseball moment was she replied, "listening to Don Larsen's perfect game on the radio in the World Series while I was washing clothes and hanging the wash on the line".

When the Sox won the World Series on October 26, 2005, all those memories came flooding back.

Mary Elizabeth, my Mom,(1920-1983) never got to see a Chicago team win a championship, but when the Sox won on October 26, 2005, I know for a fact that she was purely delighted as I was.

10. My Parents Missed It, Too
My father was born in 1918...my mother in 1919. They both passed away in 2002. My father did see the Cubs in 1945 World Series...he claimed he got in free wearing his uniform...he had just returned from Europe.

The neatest way to go to the ballpark is on the El. Last summer my son and I did the Blue Line to the Red Line and went to the game just like my parents and grandparents did. It's neat seeing either ballpark rise as the train approaches. The same can also be said for Yankee Stadium in New York. It's easy to imagine how it was when "the Babe" played there.

I spent many days at Wrigley in the 60's...remembering the 14-18-11-10 infield, but my heart has always been with the White Sox. My father always had the games on and he'd take me out to the ballpark a couple times a year. Now I've passed the tradition along. At least there's some continuity to life. LOL.

I'm still not believing the Sox won it all last year. It just hasn't registered that last year was "this year". Now to see the Cubs make it so equalibrium can be brought back to the city. LOL.

The cruelest thing I did see during the series was Mark Giangreco on Channel 7...after reporting one of the Sox victories asks "so how are the Cubs taking all this" and then he shows a wrecking ball tearing down the left field wall at Wrigley for the new bleachers. LOL. Now that was cruel.

So cheers from Logan Square to West Rogers Park to Lincolnwood to the Northwest burbs and beyond...
