a World Series, my first thought will be of my Mom.
She was a real "diehard" Cub fan. During the middle to the late 1960's, when old man Wrigley still owned the Cubs, she would take me and my brother Tom up to Wrigley every Friday afternoon when the Cubs were in town for Ladies Day.
Mind you, we would take the El from 63rd St & Loomis Avenue and always change trains once we got to the underground part of the El, because our portion of the El (red line) at that time didn't stop at Addison Avenue (green line).
To be completely honest my Mom was a total baseball fan. Even though the Cubs during that period were the perennial "losers", I do believe it was her mission in life to expose both of us to the pure joy of baseball.
My brother Tom, for some unknown reason, was a NY Yankees fan, but I remember watching live and in person, Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Willie Mays, Lou Brock (the absolute worst trade the Cubs ever made), Hank Aaron, Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, Ernie Banks (even though he's a puke), Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Johnny Bench and as much as it pains me to even mention this name Pete Rose, et al in the "friendly confines".
Mom loved baseball, in fact, when I asked her years later; what her absolute favorite baseball moment was she replied, "listening to Don Larsen's perfect game on the radio in the World Series while I was washing clothes and hanging the wash on the line".
When the Sox won the World Series on October 26, 2005, all those memories came flooding back.
Mary Elizabeth, my Mom,(1920-1983) never got to see a Chicago team win a championship, but when the Sox won on October 26, 2005, I know for a fact that she was purely delighted as I was.
