Last December as the year's kill numbers rose, they kept them closer to base.
They didn't want there to be more dead in 2005 than in 2004.
Bush "succeeded" by two bodies (they claim).
Now things will get back to normal.

Plus, the "nationalist" Resistance (as opposed to the foreign jihadists) maintained a cease-fire during election week. Now its back to normal.

Every death of a GI now, is 100 Gi's 2 years ago... the political backing for the war is down to fumes, and with a bit more work on their part, they can break the bush occupation, either by breaking bush back home, or breaking the army abroad.
It is good military tactics to step up the heat, as there is no alternative left to the US but to use arial bombing, which will only incite more opposition.
